1 MLTI 3000: MULTIDISCIPLINARY FOUNDATIONS SEMINAR Learner Exploration Project Self-Directed Learner Skill Development INITIATE LEARNING : Identify Areas of Interest or Need SELF-RELFECTION Before you create your Learning Plan, reflect on yourself as a learner using the following prompts: Consider a time you’ve taken the initiative to learn something on your own. What was it? What did you do to learn it? Who (if anyone) or what (if anything) supported your learning? How did you know that you had learned it, what made you sure? When I was interested in learning about beekeeping and potentially having my own hive someday, I took it upon myself to research and learn as much as I could about both beekeeping and honeybees. I started by checking out whatever books my local library had on beekeeping and eventually bought several of my own as well. I also used web research and videos uploaded to YouTube by other people with experience in beekeeping. The knowledge I gained was really useful for the researched proposal essay I had to write for English Composition II over the summer. I chose to write about how the Environmental Protection Agency should further their efforts in conserving bee populations. Due to the extensive research I’d done in the past, I already had a lot of background knowledge about bees and only had to do research in order to back up my facts. The books I had purchased also came in extremely handy when I needed to write about diseases and other threats bees face and also benefits humans gain from hive products in terms that weren’t difficult to understand. Because those books were tailored to regular, everyday people they really helped me discuss those topics in my paper. Why do you think it is important to take responsibility for your own learning? Learning is an important part of human growth so it’s important to take responsibility and continue learning past reaching adulthood. Exercising your brain is also very beneficial and, like muscles, knowledge can be harder to use when it’s dormant for long periods of time in your brain. Being open to the idea that you don’t “know everything” as an adult can also open your eyes to the many different viewpoints around the world, so that open-mindedness is important. How can setbacks provide opportunities? Please share an example of a setback or a mistake you have experienced and how you handled it. Setbacks or mistakes provide opportunities for learning and growth. As I mentioned previously, I had to write a researched proposal essay over the summer and I chose to write about bees. When researching the specific foods pollinated by bees, I came across a list which included cocoa. I wrote a dramatic close to the paper which narrated a future grocery store in a world where bees have been extinct and chocolate was something I had mentioned as no longer being able to buy. The peer-review of my essay taught me that bees are actually considered pollen thieves in regards to chocolate and also really taught me to double check my facts! Why do you think feedback is important for growth? Please share an example of a time you used feedback to grow or learn. People might interpret you differently than you intended and feedback can tell us those interpretations. It’s also important to give feedback when people think they’re doing something right if there’s actually room for improvement in the way they are performing. I have been serving for almost a decade now and through feedback from coworkers and managers, but mostly from guests, has taught me a lot and I now have a routine that I follow for pretty much every table. The things I learn from the most are confrontational situations with guests. I try to be as polite as possible for as long as I can but I do have trouble with getting angry over things that aren’t actually a big deal. Learning from my managers how I could do better in those situations or how they personally handle them has been really helpful in my improvement so far. Consider your current professional situation, what do you need to know and be able to do to be successful in this
INITIATE LEARNING 2 current role? As a server, I think the most important skill to have is the ability to handle very high-stress situations. Not only are there always a million things going on in a restaurant, but you also have to read nonverbal cues from guests and sometimes handle a situation in which a guest is dissatisfied or rude, which can be challenging. Consider your future professional aspirations, what would you like to be doing in 5-10 years? What will you need to know and be able to do to be successful at achieving that? I feel as though many of the skills I’ve picked up in serving will translate very nicely into librarianship. Not only am I constantly multi-tasking or prioritizing tasks, but also using effective communication with guests to ensure they have a good experience. I am a very organized person in general but I am also the person looked-to when something in the restaurant needs organizing, and I know this skill is also useful to those managing collections (a librarian). I know I should continue to improve my communication skills as well as the reading of some nonverbal cues in social situations because not only are those skills good for me now in the restaurant industry, they will also be useful as a librarian.
INITIATE LEARNING 3 STRENGTHS & AREAS OF GROWTH LIST: Future Professional Aspirations Consider your professional aspirations and your reflections above, what would you say are your current strengths and areas of growth? Try to think of three for each column. Strengths Areas of Growth I keep cool under pressure Approachability — I sometimes (often, actually) look angry when I’m not I’m very organized/good at organizing things Communication — Handling the “tough” situations is often a challenge for me because it’s instantly visible on my face when someone has said something to upset or anger me I’m a team-player — always willing to lend a hand to co- workers who need assistance or have questions Perfectionism — While I appreciate that I always give 100% effort to any task I’m doing, it does bother me personally when others aren’t doing the same and I wish it didn’t STRENGTHS & AREAS OF GROWTH LIST: BMS Program Goals
