Johnathan Brake Southern New Hampshire University 02 December 2, 2022 Module Six Journal Press releases are stories that gear up the publics interest in their industry, or they are used as a way to potentially “mop up” an incident. My chosen article is a press release from a business that I am vastly familiar with, THE United States Air Force. In my selected article, the new B-21 bomber “The Raider” is used for several reasons (convey several messages). It’s used to target a diverse audience, each one for a different reason. The first is used to “rally” and hype up our fellow Americans around a new “toy”, that we get to showcase. While the world of surveillance (purchase of the Australian “Wedgetail”), air-refueling tanker (KC-46 “Pegasus”), and a myriad of new fighter and cargo aircraft, the US military is constantly evolving, besides an area that’s been so reliable, that we haven’t looked to advance it in over 30 years. This past Friday (02 December 2022), the Air Force launched the B-21 “Raider” bomber. This new toy will revolutionize our force and help us in our posturing against China and Russia, which segways me into another targeted audience: our rivals. The debut of this new aircraft will subtly flex our airpower and air superiority over our advisories, while also showing our strength in the defense of our country. As an Air Force, our mission is to “Fly, Fight, and Win”, and maintain superiority in air, space, and cyberspace. Our goals are quite simple when you boil it down. National defense is our mission, so constantly evolving our strategies, equipment, technology, and aircraft to match

our ever-evolving landscape is paramount in supporting our goals. One important sub-goal that they often teach is “Winning hearts and minds”. By showcasing our new plane, it is supposed to help excite the public about our evolution as a force. On the flip side, utilizing a press release showcasing a new aircraft will also “strike fear” into our advisories. The unveiling ceremony was very much kept under wraps in order to keep the project a secret, another way to both pique public interest and tactfully alert our adversaries of our new aircraft. Kathy Warden, the chief executive of Northrop Grumman Corp. (the organization building the Raider) said “The magic of the platform…… is what you don’t see”, which, again, is another ploy to showcase our air superiority to those who oppose us.
