2 Future Opportunities Introduction I used to think taking a writing class was just to check a box, but I have come to realize I couldn't have been more wrong. Throughout this course, I have had time to reflect on my life thus far and have had the opportunity to diagnose my strengths and weaknesses. I have learned a lot about myself these past five weeks and have been able to paint a clear picture of where I want to be in five years. The key things I learned throughout this course are the importance of my personal ethos and cultural competency, the importance of writing personally and professionally, and a roadmap on how to improve on my deficiencies to achieve my goal in life. Personal Ethos My personal ethos revolves around compassion, family, and integrity. These values have continuously developed throughout my life and will continue to grow and shape my journey as I progress through college and into my career as a registered nurse. Compassion involves possessing empathy, understanding, and genuine concern for the well-being of others. Compassion is a critical component of the medical field. I must remain compassionate with each patient and be understanding of the struggles they are going through, especially the hardships they and their family may be experiencing that led them into my care. My family values have significantly shaped my identity, nurtured meaningful relationships, and guided my life choices. Family Values are essential in my chosen career field. They will prove indispensable in my chosen career path by providing me with the resiliency that is needed to confront any challenges thrown my way. Integrity is a principle that was instilled in me from a young age and further emphasized during my time in the military. Upholding integrity is vital to ensure I am honest with others in all interactions and deliver the highest quality of care possible. Another aspect of

3 integrity that often gets overlooked is integrity to oneself. Self-integrity is critical in a medical environment since it is imperative that I recognize and am honest with myself when I become overwhelmed or if the job takes a mental toll and I need to reach out for assistance. Diversity, equity, and inclusion are crucial concepts in the medical field. They promote cultural competence throughout the workplace for all individuals exposed. Cultural competence is the ability to effectively interact and engage with individuals from different cultures and upbringings regardless of race, sexual orientation, or religion (Indeed, 2023). Embracing these principles promotes and creates a safe and welcoming environment for colleagues, patients, and families. As a result, there would be improved patient outcomes, increased trust, and a healthier atmosphere for everyone involved. Development of Writing Skills My writing skills have significantly improved throughout this course. I now feel more at ease while writing and more confident as a writer. I acknowledge I still have many struggles and difficulties I must overcome. Still, I feel well prepared for any challenges I encounter throughout my academic journey here at the University of Arizona Global Campus. This course has provided me with valuable insights and knowledge that have greatly enhanced my writing style and common grammatical errors. I also have noticed a significant improvement in how well my sentences flow due to strengthening my structuring techniques. I still encounter challenges in my writing, such as overthinking and developing topic sentences. Overthinking has remained a persistent issue, typically resulting in assignments taking much longer than needed since I tend to doubt my choices throughout the rough draft and final paper. I am continuously working on managing this weakness by practicing mindfulness and strategies to maintain focus and clarity. Creating a topic sentence and thesis statements are also
