When it comes to critical oracy it is what establishes a person's ability to express themselves through speech. This is essential because an English Learner needs to develop the critical ability to do this. As the teacher the goal should be to challenge the students daily to complete critical oracy. This will allow the student to verbally be able to express themselves and answer essential questions in the classroom. Literacy is the ability to overall be able to read and write. In order for the student to achieve oracy there has to be some developmental literacy. This does not mean the student has to be a great writer yet, but needs to develop the vocabulary to achieve oracy. When working on development of oracy it is important to provide students with essential vocabulary. A good way of incorporating the vocabulary is to give students fill in sentences. This allows the student to put vocabulary words where they belong and practice saying the sentence. A critical part of this is the verbal half. It is important that the student is practicing vocabulary by physically saying the words and understanding what they are saying. At this point it is a good time to check in with the students to see how they are doing. You can add in some visuals that students can match the sentence to. For example, Student what does this picture of this barn mean to you? The student may reply that this barn is the home to these animals. This would be a simple sentence that is building the students critical oracy. When it comes to errors in oracy and literature it is critical to be able to identify the difference between a mistake and an error. When a student makes a mistake you can mention it to them and see their reaction. They may correct this mistake right away. If it truly is an error the student will not have an action towards correction. This is where the student will need the guidance from the teacher. It is also important to give the students the adequate amount of time to self correct before stepping in to help them resolve an error. A strategy I would use to help students with spelling is a crossword puzzle. This will allow the students to see and write the words. They then can create themselves a word bank for further help in the future. When students use this word bank they are practicing spelling every time they use it. After some time with the word bank 2-3 days you can take it away. This will allow the student to test their ability of the spelling they have learned. This is where you can monitor and find errors or mistakes. You can help further deepen this by giving the students hints on how to remember to spell the word. By using this strategy it is setting the student up for high achievement with spelling when they are simply completing a fun activity then creating their own word bank.
