Living and Learning Globally
AY2024-T2
Assignment 1
Task
Using an autobiographical approach, discuss how your knowledge of yourself and
your context (including your values, beliefs, experiences, and knowledge) have
shaped your worldview toward other cultures. You may share stories about how
your parents, teachers, colleagues, friends, churches, communities have shaped
your knowledge of what constitutes "global".
I grew up in a Buddhist community in the countryside. It has shaped me to become a stereotype.
It is not because the Buddhists are superstitious and extremists. It was just because people who
live in the countryside do not have many opportunities to get a good quality education which
opens minds and broadens views. As I came from a typical Burmese family, I had been taught to
get along with people with the same culture, religion, and family background. Our family is
religious and often has ritual occasions of our religion. At school, I tend to avoid getting together
with those whose religions are different. Now I see young me as a narrow-minded teenager who
was reluctant to accept differences. Moreover, every school I moved to favored Buddhism which
I now understand as students did not have opportunities to learn in diversity. As a result, when I
started to work at an international school where there were many Muslim colleagues and
students, I encountered challenges in dealing with them. When entering the professional realm,
there appear many challenges in bridging cultural and religious gaps. The change from a
predominantly Buddhist community to one with colleagues and students with different religious
backgrounds highlighted the cultural incompetence of a professional teacher.
As I reflect on these experiences, I realized that the journey towards embracing diversity is a
lifelong process.
Simranpreet Kaur (2023) shares her thoughts that exposing students to different
cultures and languages, promoting cross-cultural communication and understanding, encouraging
critical thinking and problem-solving skills and fostering empathy and respect are the four main
aspects in preparing students for a globalized world. As a matter of fact, my early experiences,
shaped by a lack of educational diversity and exposure, have made me overwhelmed with
cultural biases when it comes to globalization. Now I have experience in effective
communication, teamwork, and professionalism working as a teacher in this diverse community
