Lawrence 1 Ashlyn Lawrence English 1010 PS5 September 9, 2022 TED Talk Review Nursing TED Talk Research 1. What was the career/occupation you chose to research? Why? I chose nursing as my career to research. I chose nursing because that is what I am interested in majoring in after high school. I am interested in nursing because I love to care for people and I specifically want to be a labor and delivery nurse. 2. How did the speaker (please provide full name) "prove" him/herself to be ethical-knowledgeable about the topic? Was he/she an expert? How did the speaker gain this status? The first TED Talk I watched was “What Nurses Can Teach Us” by Christie Watson. She proved she was knowledgeable by including that she left the nursing field because she felt burnt out working at a hospital in the trauma unit. I would say she was an expert because she experienced firsthand what nurses go through. She gained this status by becoming a nurse in the trauma unit at her hospital. 3. Share a part that demonstrated each of the 3 persuasive tools we discussed logos, pathos, and ethos. The next TED Talk I watched was “Lessons from Nursing to the World” by Kathleen Bartholomew. She talked about the hierarchy in working in a hospital and the healthcare culture. A part of the TED Talk that demonstrates logos, ethos, and pathos is at 9:14 she shares a demonstration on the hierarchy that her coworkers assumed to be the “food chain”. This demonstrates logos because it builds up her argument that there is a hierarchy in nursing. Ethos is demonstrated by her firsthand account of how her demonstration went down the day she presented it at her hospital. Pathos is demonstrated by her points on how people think in healthcare culture. “It doesn’t matter if you can run seven or eight pumps because if you’re in a multi-injury accident and your brain is just much and you can’t remember how to walk or swallow or talk, what you really need is somebody who can stay with you for seven or eight months until you can talk again,” Bartholomew says as she is pointing out the last line on her demonstration. 3. What new information did you learn about your chosen career/occupation? I learned that the healthcare environment is not what I was thinking it was like. I learned that healthcare professions are something I should be cautious of because of
Lawrence 2 the culture. I am kind of rethinking my plans after high school because I did not realize how bad the culture is and how I could change my life by choosing to be a nurse. 5. After watching, what burning questions did you think of that might drive your research for argumentative essay? A few questions I have are why the culture is not changing especially since cancel culture is at its peak in 2022. I am wondering how it could change fairly. Another question I have is are most hospitals a bad environment to work in.
