Dulce et Decorum Est
BY WILFRED OWEN
Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs,
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots,
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of gas-shells dropping softly behind.
Gas! GAS! Quick, boys!—An ecstasy of fumbling
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time,
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling
And flound’ring like a man in fire or lime.—
Dim through the misty panes and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.
In all my dreams before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.
If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil’s sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,—
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie:
Dulce et decorum est
Pro patria mori.

4.
What question would you ask the author if you could? (About the poem or about his/her life)
If I could ask the author any question, I would ask Wilfred Owen, if he were alive, why did he decide to
be a poet during the time of war? For instance, I could be specific and ask, “Why did you turn your
military experience due to the war into poetry which helped you get through the hardships of World War
I?”
5.
Physical analysis of the poem: (# of words, # of lines, # of stanzas) Use complete sentences.

and the poem is divided into four stanzas of varying lengths.
6.
Topic/subject - this is what the poem appears to be about on the surface (no hidden meaning)
Use complete sentences.
Accordingly, it appears that the subject of the poem “Dulce et Decorum Est” of Wilfred Owen is about
the actual experiences of the soldiers during World War 1 and the awful nature of war. It painfully
illustrates the sufferings and the deaths inflicted onto the soldiers on the battle field in a way that defies
the usually romanticized pictures of war in this era.
7.
Brief summary of the poem Use a complete paragraph.
The gruesome warfare realities in World War I are described in the emotional anti-war poem entitled
"Dulce Et Decorum Est," authored by Wilfred Owen. It offers a vivid and emotional narrative of the toll a
gas assault under combat conditions has upon men. A very good example herein is in how Owen
describes the pain and agony experienced between soldiers; death for the country in general destroys
the glory of wars where serving one's nation becomes honor worthy and dying for the nation is a virtue.
Finally, the poem presents the real meaning behind the Latin words "dulce et decorum est pro patria
mori," which translates into English too – it's sweet to die for your country. This word summed up what
had been communicated throughout the poem, showing that.
8.
Theme: State a major theme presented in the poem and state what you think the author is
saying about that theme. Use a complete paragraph.
One main theme that appears in Wilfred Owen’s “Dulcis Est Produm” has to do with war being the
greatest evil. Through painting, he portrays the strenuous sufferings experienced by soldiers at front line
depicting their physiologic and emotional distresses. He employs such explicit and unrefined descriptions
trying to prove that patriotic and romantic feelings of heroes are fiction. All they do is skim over reality
beneath beautiful fairy-tales, words, and stories. According to the author, the war is not something
wonderful as is typically assumed. It is just a nightmare of sadness, death and broken people spirit. The
propaganda associated with the First World War is a subject that Owen says on in his poem and he calls
for an authentic picture of war in place. In essence, he refuses a notion that it is “sweet and neat” to die
for their own countries. Therefore, the poem presents how ugly such a war is to those who don’t want to
participate in it.
9.
Mood: in one or two words, state the overall mood of the poem.
