Why are women more likely to seek mental health treatment than men?
Oliver, M. I., Pearson, N., Coe, N., & Gunnell, D. (2005). Help-seeking behaviour in men and
women with common mental health problems: Cross-sectional study.

The aims and ideals that this article has are to investigate patterns of lay and professional
help-seeking in men and women aged 16–64 years in relation to severity of symptoms and
sociodemographic variables. It talks about the ideals of health promotion interventions to
encourage appropriate help-seeking behavior in young people in which particularly young men,
may lead to improvements in the mental health of this group of the population. This article helps
my research because it shows and provides demographics on why or why not young men receive
mental health treatment compared to young women and what could help promote the change in
adulthood.
Perlick, D. A., & Manning, L. N. (2007). Overcoming Stigma and Barriers to Mental Health
Treatment. In J. E. Grant & M. N. Potenza (Eds.),
Textbook of men’s mental health.
(pp.
389–417). American Psychiatric Publishing, Inc.
This article is about overcoming the barrier and stigmas around mental health and how to
promote more usage for men. It also goes into the indicators in which men or women decide
whether or not to seek treatment, such as psychological distress and social norms. Not only that
but this article talks about the problems with stigmas and barriers in seeking mental health
treatment when it comes to men. This article helps my research by providing an insight into
stigmas about mental health and how it affects a man over a woman seeking mental health
treatment.
Sagar-Ouriaghli, I., Godfrey, E., Bridge, L., Meade, L., & Brown, J. S. L. (2019). Improving mental
health service utilization among men: A systematic review and synthesis of behavior change
techniques within interventions targeting help-seeking.

(3).

This article provides insight into seeking behaviors behind men and why they differ from women.
It talks about the indicators that help promote mental health treatment seeking and how they
would implement men to seek and receive mental health treatment. These indicators contain
things such as a strong role models to convey information, psychoeducational material to improve
mental health knowledge, assistance with recognizing and managing symptoms, active
problem-solving tasks, motivating behavior change, signposting services, and, finally, content that
built on positive male traits (e.g., responsibility and strength). The way this article helps my
research is by giving insight in how to help promote men to seek treatment. Not only that but it
also helps give insight into why men differ from women in seeking mental health treatment and
reasonings behind it.

among men with depression: A qualitative study.

This article talks about how men’s masculinity and social norms affect them receiving and seeking
mental health treatment. Men are supposed to be seen as self-reliant, strong, not allowed to show
emotions and contain them to themselves as well as being capable and in control. These social
norms have put a huge block into how men perceive mental health and treatment as a whole.
