1. What did you learn in this course (about the subject matters, yourself, and your teammates)? This course taught me a lot about the business aspects of engineering, while also providing opportunities for self development as a student and teammate. In terms of course content, I learned everything needed to create a successful business from just an idea. I built an understanding of the design process, business model development, and how to combine these concepts to create a successful business. I learned that I am a person who prefers to be proactive in group assignments. I have noticed that when assignments are left to the last minute it is far more stressful, and the group has less success. In addition, I have noticed that I benefit from choosing to take on tasks which interest me, making it much easier to feel motivated and even excited about getting things done. For example, during the design process I chose to take on the 2D and 3D modeling for the product prototype, and I found that I was much more eager to work on this than many of the other less interesting tasks. 2. How do you know that you learned what you claim you learned? I know I have learned the concepts because I have been able to apply them both theoretically and practically. In addition, the things I’ve learned about my ability to function effectively in groups have been reflected in this class and in other projects I have been a part of. My grade of 96% on the midterm exam indicates a strong understanding of the material, and our success in the project report and presentation reflect this as well. By applying the concepts learned in class, my group and I have been able to create a successful business around our idea from the start of the course. The things I have learned about my interpersonal skills in group projects have been demonstrated in other classes as well. I have recently completed a project to design a trebuchet and found that I was far more effective when we were proactive and got things done on schedule. I noticed that as we fell behind the project became far more stressful and it was more difficult to get things done. 3. Is anything you learned of immediate value (e.g., you can start using it right away)? Yes, there are a few things that I’ve learned, including the design process and QFD charts, that I have been able to apply to ongoing projects. I recently finished a project to design and build a trebuchet with the goal of maximizing range based on the provided constraints. Using what I have learned about the design process and QFD charts, I was able to come up with a series of designs and compare them based on the important factors for the project.
4. Write a short essay (up to 250 words, but no less than 200). The essay should take a form of a letter addressed to the future student(s) of the Engineering Management & Globalization class. In a letter to a future fellow student, who may follow in your footsteps next time the course is offered, explain briefly what you are studying, and what you value most of things you have learned in this class that may be useful in pursuing your studies (be specific). Provide also any useful tips in terms of studying strategies, work on assignments, etc. Anything you wish had known before taking the class (e.g., things to do or to avoid). To one who is Engineering Management & Globalization, I would like to offer some information, inspiration, and advice that I believe will help you to succeed in this class. This class will teach you everything you need to know about the role of engineers in a business, and how to turn an idea into something that will generate profit. Everything taught in this class is valuable, and you will see that for yourself when you apply the concepts during tutorials and in your project. To get the most out of this class, make sure to listen intently during lectures and make note of important concepts. Never be afraid to ask for clarification or further information, as most of the concepts are new and can be confusing at times. Engaging with the professor and your classmates is an excellent way to retain information and make connections in the class. It is also extremely important to be proactive about reports and assignments. Reports will be completed weekly and contain a lot of writing which is often very time consuming. As a result, it is easy to get behind, so staying ahead on the reports is crucial. Most importantly, I advocate for open communication with other group members. There are a lot of group assignments, so making sure responsibilities are shared and completed on time is key to being successful in this class. 5. Refer to your answers in Assignment 1, what expectations were met about Engineering Management and Globalization. Explain which topic you learned about the most. Most of my expectations were met about Engineering Management and Globalization. Prior to the start of the class, I had hoped to learn about the design process and manufacturing systems, both of which were covered extensively throughout the semester. In addition, I expected I would have to learn a lot about the business aspects of engineering, which was certainly true. I also expected to do a lot of team-based projects and activities which I anticipated not enjoying. However, looking back I found these projects to be some of the more enjoyable moments from this class. Being able to collaborate with my peers and share ideas made assignments more interesting and provided ideas and perspectives that I likely wouldn’t have considered. Overall, I have enjoyed the way this class encourages teamwork and participation, it was certainly unexpected in a good way. The topic I learned about the most was the business aspect of engineering. A majority of the course has stemmed from the Business Model Canvas, as each of the concepts we learn tie into a section of it. I wasn’t eager to learn about the business side of engineering at the start of the semester, as I felt it wouldn’t apply to what I’d hoped to do and achieve in my career. However, I’ve realized that behind every job I’ll have or product I’ll design will be the business model that makes it
