Bloom 1 Isaiah Bloom 7 November 2019 MUSC 100 Professor Greene Calvin Lin’s Impact Calvin Lin was the young performer of the evening played pieces from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Sonata NO.2 in A minor BWV 1003, which included Andante and Allegro. He also included Danse Espagnole by Fritz Kreisler with his pianist accompaniment Mikhail Korzhev. He also played Mit Leidenschaftlichem Ausdruck, Allegretto, and Lebhaft from Robert Schumans Violin Sonata No.1 in A minor, Op.105. Lin’s music organization consisted of the slow then fast combination of music to end his performance. Calvin Lin’s performance is important as it shows the evolution and variety of music through the Baroque, Classical and Romantic era’s. Lin’s choice of music included the composers Johann Sebastian Bach, Fritz Kreisler, and Robert Schuman. Bach was a Baroque-era composer that consisted of the use of balanced homophonic texture, strings, and winds over the use of percussion. Meanwhile, Kreisler wrote within the Classical era and used homophonic texture, a combination of violin and piano pizzicato, and dance rhythm. Robert Schuman music took place within the Romantic era which used homophonic texture, programmatic style, which uses music to tell a story. Calvin Lin’s performance of Danse Espagnole by Fritz Kreisler was by far his best performance of the night. Not only because the song itself appealed to me, but by the intensity caused by its fast-paced tempo. Calvin himself also showed more enthusiasm when performing this particular song. The use of pizzicato also created an intense tone making the music easy for
Bloom 2 the audience’s emotions to connect with the music. The performer made this song more enjoyable than the rest as he himself showed more enthusiasm when using pizzicato and moving his body to stress the importance of accents. Compared to his other performances, Calvin appeared to be playing through the motion and really connecting to his music. This performance also impressed me due to Calvin's ability to play the violin accurately at such a fast tempo. As well as demonstrating his ability to play at the same speed and note accuracy as the piano but contain a balance of dynamics between him and his pianist accompaniment. Lin’s overall performance was great as he effectively showed the difference and evolution of music from the Baroque, Classical and Romance era. The use of the different genres really made a difference as it showed the unique aspects that each musical era focused on. The recital was very effective in comparing and contrasting the different musical eras. The audience was able to see the difference in style as the music varied in tempo, and form of the music such as fast/slow/fast. Also, the audience was able to emotionally connect with some of the music, especially the Romantic era but not as much to the other eras. Thus, allowing the audience to see that within certain eras the music was more complex such as the Baroque.
