How Can We Prevent Wrong-Way Drivers
Despite safety measures being employed in Arizona, wrong-way driving incidents are
increasing posing a threat to the motoring public, the state may need to employ other measures to
reduce the frequency of these types of incidents.
Wrong-way driving, defined in the
Overview of Intelligent Transportation System Safety
Countermeasure for Wrong-Way Driving
as “the act of driving in the direction opposite to the
actual traffic flow on physically divided highways” (Hosseini, P et al, 2021) is a primary concern
for the intestate system in Arizona.
According to an ABC15 report “2021 among deadliest years
of wrong-way driving deaths” Caballero, 2021).
As of November 26, 2021, in the same article,
ABC15 compiled the data of all wrong-way for Maricopa County which resulted in “30 major
wrong-way driving incidents” with “10 ended in deadly crashes” (Caballero, 2021).
The map
below compiled by ABC15 provides a snapshot of the locations in the greater Phoenix vicinity,
also known as the ‘Valley’ as of December 23, 2021.
Nine red markers represent fatalities, six
orange markers represent injuries with no fatalities as the result of an accident and the 14 yellow
markers are incidents where there were no injuries reported, 32 total.
In comparison, 2020 had
18 total incidents with two fatalities, 2019 had 42 incidents with one fatality, 2018 had 34
incidents with one fatality, and 2017 had 23 incidents with four fatalities.

In an article published on their website on July 2, 2020, Arizona Department of
Transportation (ADOT) piloted “thermal camera detention technology . . . that detects wrong-
way vehicles . . . has detected more than 100 vehicles traveling the wrong way” (ADOT 2020).
The design of this system is that once a wrong-way vehicle is detected that it triggers a series of
events “through a computerized decision-support system, the system also triggers the internal
illuminated “Wrong Way” signs with flashing red lights aimed at getting the attention of wrong-
way drivers.
At the same time, the system immediately alerts AZDPS (Arizona Department of
Public Safety) and ADOT, allowing law enforcement to respond immediately and ADOT to
immediately alert other freeway drivers with “Wrong Way Driver/Ahead/Exit Freeway” warning
on overhead message boards.” (ADOT 2020).
