Literacy Profile Assignment Part 1

Personal Literacy Profile and Critical Reflection
1.
How would you describe yourself as a reader?
When it comes to reading, I would consider myself as someone who does not enjoy reading,
prefer to watch or listen to a book than to read a book or an article. This stems from not being
exposed to reading from a young age, my parents never read books to me and my little sister
when we were growing up, instead of reading we would watch Disney movies. I was never
forced to read books until went into kindergarten and been then I struggled because at that age
my first language was Spanish, therefore I had difficulty reading the books in school. To this day
I do not enjoy reading and I find it hard for me to stay concentrated on reading an article or a
book, I get bored easily or I get distracted easily, causing me to not be a very good reader. The
way I was brought up as a child has had an influence on me as a reader today. Although I do not
enjoy reading on my own, I do enjoy reading to children and seeing their expressions in the
books I read. I would have appreciated it if I was exposed and encouraged more to reading when
I was growing up because that would be helpful to this day.
2.
How would you describe yourself as a writer?
I enjoy writing more than I do reading, I would say writing allows me to be freer and allows
my ideas to flow. I do consider myself to have a hard time putting my ideas and thoughts into a
proper written format. I can brainstorm and jot down all my ideas and thoughts but to articulate
my thoughts and ideas onto a well written essay is difficult for me because I was never that good
at English. What has helped me in my writing over the years is reading my work out loud to
catch any incorrect formatting and I have also asked other people to edit my work because
sometimes I do not catch everything that’s wrong. I enjoy writing about topics that I am
interested in and topics that do not involve reading articles that are 20 pages long.

How do you choose books to read? What is your current favorite book?

Personal Literacy Profile and Critical Reflection
When it comes to choosing books for myself to read, I tend to go for books that have
topics I am interested in, and I tend to go for books that are not that long. I also usually read the
back of the book or the last page to see if it catches my attention. When I read books, it takes me
a while to finish them because I get distracted so easily, I am not the type of person to just sit
reading books for hours every day. I have not read a book in a while but the last book that I
enjoyed reading was
Pretty Little Liars
by
Sara Shepard, it is a book based on a tv show that I
watched when I was younger about these high school girls. The book was full of mystery,
teenage drama and romance which are genres that I enjoy reading, I enjoyed reading this book
because I enjoyed watching the series alongside it and because it had relatable parts because at
the time I was in high school.

What are your earliest memories of learning to read? What is your favorite
children's book?
My earliest memories of learning to read were when I was in grade 1, I was put in a different
classroom to learn because I was not at the level of all the other children because I grew up only
speaking Spanish t home and not being taught how to read or write in English. I would be put to
read picture books with a few words in them and they were never that interesting, they would be
books with basic pictures and writing, I remember being taught how to sound out words using
my finger at the same time. Once I learned how to read and was at a good reading level, I really
enjoyed reading
The Magic Tree House
serries by Marry Pope Osborne, I enjoyed reading this
series of books because they were filled with action and adventure each book had a different
story line which helped me expand my imagination.
