North American Studies: NO105-OC2
Billionaires, Beavers, and Banditos
Winter 2023 Final Examination
Instructor: Sally Heath
INSTRUCTIONS
For your final exam, you will choose
two
out of the four essay questions below. In each essay,
please
make it clear which question you are answering
. Your answers to the questions must be in proper
essay form, including a (brief) introduction with a clear thesis statement, body paragraphs to support
your thesis that reference specific course materials, and a brief conclusion.
When supporting your thesis, be sure to provide
specific evidence
, drawn exclusively from NO105
course readings, lectures, and films, identifying these sources as clearly as possible.
Direct quotations from course readings and other learning materials will add credibility to your
argument and claims. When using direct evidence from these sources, please include an
in-text citation
(e.g. Fuchs 2013, 33) to identify where the information came from. A list of full references is
NOT
necessary
due to the time constraints of the exam.
You should aim to write as much as you can during the time allowed,
providing as many concrete
examples from the course material as you can recall and apply
, while responding to a question.
Remember, you are trying to
prove
that you have read and understood all the readings, viewed all the
lectures and films, etc. Provide
as many examples from course content
in your answers as possible to
demonstrate
this.
DO NOT
substantially repeat evidence presented in response to one question, in your response to the
second question. In other words, try to demonstrate your knowledge
across as many course topics and
themes
as you can, and
consider this when selecting your questions
.
When you have completed your exam, please upload it into the Final Exam dropbox (as you have
done with all of your reading responses and writing assignments) in MS Word or PDF format.
PLEASE REMEMBER YOU THAT MUST HAVE YOUR EXAM UPLOADED TO THE
DROPBOX WHEN IT CLOSES. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ACCESS THE DROPBOX
AFTER THAT, AND EXAMS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED BY EMAIL.

QUESTIONS
Choose TWO (2) of the following FOUR (4) questions:
1.
Course Theme
–
Asymmetrical Development:
A theme that has come up frequently throughout the
course is Mexico’s asymmetrical development within North America and how that affects their position
within the continent.
Based on what you have learned in the course, what are the reasons for
Mexico’s
asymmetrical development and how does this affect their position in contemporary North America?
Your answer to this question should
present a thesis related to Mexico’s
asymmetrical position
within the continent and the effects of this, supported with specific evidence from course materials.
2.
Course Theme
–
Continental Integration:
Throughout the course, the topic of greater integration
within the continent that goes beyond trade agreements has come up several times.
Based on what you
learned from the course learning materials, in what areas do you think it makes sense for there to be
greater continental integration
?
Your answer to this question should present a clear argument about
the areas that present opportunities for greater integration within North America, supported by
specific references to lesson topics and learning materials used in the course.
3.
Course Theme
–
Convergence and Divergence:
One of the goals of this course has been to identify
ways in which the countries of North America are similar (convergence), as well as the ways in which
they are different (divergence) from one another
. Based on what you learned in the course, what factors
(e.g. historical, economical, cultural) drive these areas of convergence and divergence within the
continent?
Your answer to this question should present a thesis that indicates your position in
relation to the question, supported by a minimum of three examples from the course material
exclusively to support your argument.
4.
Course Theme
–
Examining Borders:
Across the different topics studied in this course, many lessons
featured a discussion of borders and their various real and/or symbolic functions.
With these different
functions in mind, what roles do you think borders play in North America today?
Your answer to this
question should present an argument about the role(s) of borders in North America today,
discussed in relation to at least three of the lesson topics from this course.
Reminder: Once you have completed your exam, please upload it into the Final Exam dropbox (as you
