Home Group Town Hall Problem Set #2, Unit 2, Chapters 4-6
General Guidelines:
For our Home Group Town Halls,
every member of the group
must
contribute to the assignment. You will be provided with a Google folder where you can
collect your Town Halls and work on them collectively.
Once you finish your work,
designate one member to move your answers to either a Word document, a PDF file, or
an accessible Google Doc so that it can be uploaded to Canvas.
Make sure that
everyone’s name is listed in the heading of your document and add your brief annotation
describing everyone's contribution to the beginning of it before you upload to Canvas.
This Town Hall assignment is divided into two parts – definition and short answer. In
order to receive full credit, your Home Group’s submission must adhere to all guidelines
and must include both parts. Each group is only allowed one submission for this
assignment; I will not accept individual submissions, and I will not accept assignments via
email.
This Town Hall is due no later than
Friday,
October
2
7
. If your group finds that you need
more time, be sure to email me no later than Wednesday,
October 25
.
Part One: Definition
In this first part of our Town Hall, define
at least 10
of the terms in the terminology word
bank below in your own words (this means that you should come to a consensus with
your group mates about the key features of the term that would define it to someone
who has no familiarity with it). This also means that you need
at least 3-4 sentences
to
help you clearly and thoroughly define each term.

Part 2: Short Answer
Please answer each of the questions below
in at least two paragraphs (7-10 sentences)
. Your
answer should include
examples
, and these can be from the textbook, from our lecture notes,
and/or from our supplemental videos from the Unit which are in our Canvas course shell. You
can be creative in this answer, too; if you would like to add images, videos or any other outside
sources, do not hesitate to do so (but be sure to provide
context
around your example).
Question #1:
Our text (beginning on page 71) describes certain
contingencies
that made
it possible for the “one nation, one language” ideology to become a reality of the
modern nation-state. First, describe each of these contingencies. Then, explain how the
framework of the nation-state is deeply connected with the resulting framework of
“race”.
(Chapter 4)
Question #2:
Describe the four major categories of writing systems and provide modern
examples of each. Then consider our in-class discussion of the political implications
inherent in a nation-state’s adoption of a particular writing system. What are those
political implications? Why might a nation-state choose one writing system over
another?
(Chapter 5)
Question #3:
Consider the story of the Qur’an at the beginning of Chapter 5 as well as
our in-class discussion of other religions (namely Christianity and, more specifically, the
Catholic church) and their connection with language ideology and politics. Why is it
important to consider the ways that writing has historically been seen as sacred within
these contexts?
(Chapter 5)
Question #4
: Our text (pp. 131-132) shows three patterns in which countries determine
their
official languages
:
compromise, neutral,
and
dominant
. First, describe each of
these. Then explain how official languages differ from
national languages
and synthesize
this understanding with the notion that such distinctions reflect “asymmetrical power
relations among social groups”.
(Chapter 6)
Question #5:
Our text (p. 140) shows three different ways in which
minority languages
are treated alongside
majority languages
, particularly in education. Describe each of
these, then connect your assessment with
this
CBS News
story
on Proposition 58 in
California. Which strategy is being used in the case of the California educational system?
(Chapter 6)
Note
: Please be sure to check your work before submitting to Canvas; multiple submissions are
not allowed for this assignment, so you won’t be able to go back in and re-submit if there is
something you’d like to change!
