Women’s and children’s health, as well as their economic opportunities and positions, public spending, and even growth of the nation as a whole are all at stake due to harsh rules and regulations regarding birth control. C. What concerns does each side have? - Pro-OTC Birth Control community advocates for their side saying that by reducing rates of unintended pregnancies, contraception also reduces the need for unsafe abortion and reduces HIV transmissions from mothers to newborns, increasing overall health and public safety of the nation . Easier access to the pill will not only contribute to that, but also save millions of dollars to the US taxpayers. Con-OTC birth control opinions include topics such as supply/demand concept once the pill becomes available over the counter, the uncontrolled intake of hormones daily, decrease in buyers’ privacy, and personal religious beliefs which prohibit birth control use in general. II. Perspective 1- Pro A. What is the overall reason people hold this position? - The main reason communities are pro OTC-birth control is to promote women’s health and safety. Another important reason is economic growth of the nations by contributing to contraceptive access, so these more advantaged women are able to plan for and delay childbearing and invest in their education and careers, resulting in higher labor force participation, better jobs, and higher wages. B. What evidence do they cite? What does the research say about this point of view? - Research mainly supports this point of view as there is much positive evidence of the birth control use in history, such as the increase in labor force and specialization after the Women’s Rights movements and availability of the pill due the suffrage. III. Perspective 2 - Con A. What is the overall reason people hold this position? - Some are against the OTC- Birth control access because of their beliefs that the pill in general causes health and other concerns for women, decreases their privacy, causes issues in traditional family roles, and contradicts religious beliefs.

What does the research say about this point of view? - Hormonal contraceptive users, in contrast with non users, were found to have higher rates of depression, anxiety, and eating disorders.
