Topic 4 DQ 1
Consider your grammar and writing education in elementary school. What methods of instruction did you find most beneficial? Why were these methods most beneficial for you?
Grammar and writing were essential components of my elementary school curriculum. I believe that writing was significantly more constant than grammar. Even as an adult, I find myself making grammar mistakes that I should have learned in elementary school. The most common methods of instruction were simply putting these skills into practice on a regular basis. My elementary school did not use computers, and I am old enough to remember that. My teachers regularly urged us to think critically and make similarities to our own experiences. I recall several journal prompts that we had to respond to on a regular
basis. The teacher did not grade for perfection; she simply wanted us to write complete phrases with some thought behind them. This type of training was beneficial since it taught us how to respond to a prompt and quickly organize our thoughts (Flores-Isom, 2007). Our teacher only gave us 15 minutes to respond, rather than till the end of the day. This is an important life skill as we become older. Whether it's responding to a topic with intentional thought, writing emails, etc. This benefited me throughout my adulthood.
