Synthesis Assignment 1)
In John Schafer’s “The Deterrent Effect of Three Strikes Law” he claims that the law should stay in place because it does well at deterring crime and how well it decreased the crime rate in California. While Ray Fisman believes the law should be changed or repealed because she believes it doesn’t deter people from crime just changes the way they commit them and that while it did significantly decrease the crime rate in California that is all it will be doing. 2)
They both bring up similar points but utilize those talking points. For example, the significance of the California crime rate decrease, Fisman says that will be the only good thing the law provides, while Shafer says that the decrease showed that the law was an essential part of the crime control puzzle. They only focus on two sides of the argument, Fisman focuses on those who have already been affected by the law and how well the law
does at deterring them from crime, while Schafer focuses on the deterrent effect the law does for those who have not yet committed crime. 3)
The similarities the arguments have are the topics of argument, both articles use the same points just use them to defend their arguments differently. The topics got into the deterrent effect and the California crime rate decrease after the law was passed.

4)
I agree with Fisman when he says that those who have committed crime and continue to commit crime will commit more violent crimes because they will be punished the same as a minor crime, so changing the law and the function of it does need to be fixed. I also agree with Schafer when he says the law deters people from committing crime that have not yet committed it because if they know the risks they are less likely to commit the crimes and are easy to help. 5)
I think while there are benefits to the Three Strikes Law there are also significant drawbacks to it as well. In most places the law is in place the third strike is any crime that
classifies as a felony, I think the law would be more effective if it just applied to violent crimes for the 3rd strikes just like the first 2 strikes. If there is a change in how the 3rd law is charged, there is a higher chance it will keep people from committing violent crime. It will also keep people from going to extreme lengths when committing a minor crime when on their third strike, like theft. Fisman mentions that if an ex convict is on their 3rd strike and falls on hard times and needs to steal for money they are more likely to go to more drastic measures to get out of getting arrested because they will get punished the same no matter what. https://web-p-ebscohost-com.ezproxy1.lib.asu.edu/ehost/detail/detail?vid=4&sid=60192e1b-
