Why Social Media Does More Harm Than Good
For years social media has been used to communicate, keep up with distant friends, ad-
vertise, and quickly spread news. While social media platforms do sometimes contribute to the betterment of society, as the years go on we continue to see negative trends linked to higher us-
ages of these platforms. Social media does more harm than good because of its links to poor body image, psychiatric issues, and the spreading of false information. Social media’s impact on body image and standards is absolutely undeniable. The pur-
poses of platforms are to post the highlights of our lives and project a personally selected social image. This can make many people feel inadequate on a daily basis causing them to ask them-
selves things like, “Why don’t I look like that?” or “Why is my life so boring?” Never achieving this unattainable standard of beauty leaves us second guessing ourselves. In, Jarman, Hannah K., et al. "Motivations for Social Media use: Associations with Social Media Engagement and Body Satisfaction and Well-being among Adolescents." spectives and an Agenda for Research." Sex Roles, vol. 71, no. 11-12, 2014, pp. 363-377. Pro-

cle focuses on the theoretically driven body image standards our society has. It also focuses on the thought process behind the people social media effects. Detailing how difficult attaining self confidence, kind body image, and good mental health can be. The effects these platforms will have on the next generations are frightening, and the extremely unhealthy eating habits, body im-
age, and repercussions on our physical body are undeniably linked. In, Jia, Guizhi, et al. "Psychometric Evaluation of the Chinese Version of Social Anxiety Scale for Social Media Users and Cross-Sectional Investigation into this Disorder among College
Students." Comprehensive Psychiatry, vol. 116, 2022. ProQuest, https://www.proquest.com/

sequences of using social media regularly. They discovered that social anxiety, depression, and other psychiatric processes were stimulated because of social media usage. False information spread through social media has become an increasingly important is-
