Exploring Academic Literacies
Question: Why is it important that the author consider a subject thoughtfully while developing a clear indication that the topic in which he is writing matters?
Writing in academic contexts can serve different purposes – to argue your point on a topic
and why, to report or educate on a specific issue, or to propose a solution to a problem, and so on. The author needs to provide evidence that he has considered the subject thoughtfully. Whether he is composing a report, an argument, or some other kind of writing, the piece needs to
demonstrate that the author has thought seriously about the topic and done the research. With writing, a subject that is thoughtfully and thoroughly researched illustrates the author's understanding of the subject and creates interest from your audience as to why your topic is worth exploring and why your writing is worth reading. pp 3-4
Question: Why should a thesis statement within academic writing be supported by proven evidence and acknowledge multiple perspectives?
First in writing, the author needs to develop a thesis to create a focus on an essay’s main idea. The writer needs to be able to write the main idea in a few sentences to create a clear idea for the paper. Your thesis statement should acknowledge your subject is complicated and there needs to be more ways of seeing it. When writing a thesis statement, you need to provide good reasons and evidence for your thesis and evidence to support your reasons. Evidence can sometimes come from your own experiences and gaining knowledge from that can help with writing your statement. p 5
Question: One key to success is simply sticking to the task at hand. The eight bullet points given concerning persistence on page 50-51 offer some solid pieces of advice for academic

success. Choose and discuss two of the eight bullet points that you believe will be the most beneficial (and why) for you to use during this and upcoming courses. The two bullet points I chose are: “make a plan and establish a schedule”, and “when you’re working on several assignments, tackle the hardest ones first” (Bullock, Goggin, Weinberg, p 50). As a high school student, I am involved with many extracurricular activities such as sports, working two jobs, babysitting, leading a student group House Church, and being very active in my church and youth group. School work and regular work are truly a balance, and
if I don’t set up a weekly plan, establish a schedule and stick to it, I will not be successful in my work. Taking larger assignments and breaking them down into daily goals is how I manage the workload. This ties into my second chosen bullet point – tackling the hardest ones first. When I have a big assignment that takes a lot of time and effort, I use my energies towards the harder projects first, and the smaller ones will fall into place. If the larger heavy workload projects are tackled in the beginning, you’ll have the brain power to return and revise anything when that burden is off your plate. Question: Addressing the “Taking Responsibility” of developing academic habits of the mind, which one of the following statements strikes you the most concerning your personal responsibility for this course and why?
The one that strikes me the most would have to be #2: “Treat school as you do a job.’’ For me, I find it hard to be my own boss and take control of my schoolwork load. I tend to struggle to plan it out according to what I know needs to be done, for example, setting a planned schedule for getting up early in the day, handling my real job, personal commitments with church, schoolwork, etc. As I walk this life journey it’s my continual prayer to ask the Lord to open my eyes to prioritize my schedule so that my college classes are equally important as a job, but to enjoy every step of the way.
Question: When reading texts that may prove somewhat difficult, a good practice to develop in active reading is annotation. Discuss what it means to annotate a text and the benefits you see from this form of actively engaging the text.
