Task 1 | Essay #2 (4-5 pages) 200 points Literary fairy tales, in contrast to fairy tales derived from the oral tradition, are the product of the imagination of the creative writer who integrates traditional elements in the story. These fairy tales often have an intentional message, which corresponds with the author's worldview. Directions. Choose one of the topics below and write an essay of 4-5 pages, double spaced (1,000–1,500 words). Make sure you have a thesis (what you are concluding, suggesting, demonstrating, analyzing, and so forth) that is clearly stated in the first paragraph. Provide several examples from the text of the tales you discuss to support your argument, but do not paraphrase. Make sure to give your essay a title that informs the reader about the essay and include a bibliography and correct references. You are required to find a secondary text on your choice of subject in the library or online and incorporate it in your essay. If your source is online, make sure it is verifiable. Choose from these topics: " Eckbert the Fa ir"–This tale is a creative literary fairy tale, which exhibits many features common to German Romanticism. The fairy tale was a medium for writers of this movement, such as Ludwig Tieck, who wrote original fairy tales that emphasized elements including nature, psychology, human emotion, fantasy, and irrationality. In the first part of your essay, compare "Eckbert the Fair" to the classical fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm. What formal fairy tale elements are found in "Eckbert the Fair"? In general, comment on how this story differs from classic folk and fairy tales. In the second part, elaborate on the specific instances in this fairy tale that highlight the Romantic features described above (e.g., nature, psychology, emotion, fantasy, irrationality, and the struggle between two conflicting powers). Explain how the world of "Eckbert the Fair" is different from that found in traditional fairy tales. Provide several examples from the text to support your answers as well as at least one reference to a secondary text (literary criticism) that you found. " The Donkey Prince "–Angela Carter's literary fairy tales include heroines, which differ from most classical tales, providing alternatives to the typical depiction of passive women. In your essay, discuss what elements of the traditional fairy tale can be found in "The Donkey Prince." Which characteristics distinguish it from a children's story? Would you consider the tale a feminist fairy tale? If so, provide examples from the story that
support a feminist perspective. Also, would you say Carter presents a one-sided feminist perspective? Also use Carter's tale "The Company of Wolves" and the film that was made from it (see Lesson 4) as reference in your discussion of Carter's feminist tales. " The Happy Prince "–Oscar Wilde used the genre of the fairy tale as a framework for displaying his ideas of Christian Socialism and critique of the status quo in Victorian England. What elements of the traditional fairy tale are found in "The Happy Prince"? What elements are not typical of traditional fairy tales? Can one find elements of the fairy tale as outlined by Vladimir Propp? Regarding Oscar Wilde's social criticism, what elements of society does he criticize? How are the opposition elements of good/bad depicted in this fairy tale? Who is truly human in the tale? You will have a chance to rewrite this essay in Lesson 7. However, be aware that this first draft is worth 200 points, while the second draft is worth 100 points . Make sure you do your best with the first draft. Don't forget to give your paper a title. Ask yourself the following questions before submitting your essay: Do you have a thesis with supporting arguments? You should be able to tell a friend in one or two sentences what the essence of your paper is. Make sure your thesis is clearly stated, usually in the first paragraph. Is your paper written in correct style and grammar? Make sure you do not have sentence fragments (verb or subject missing), a comma splice or fused sentence, incorrect subject-verb agreements, or incorrect pronoun reference. Read your paper out loud, which helps to catch possible errors. Do you have a bibliography that lists your primary and secondary sources? For secondary sources, make sure any source online is verifiable. Go to the library and find a secondary source. Tatar and Warner are secondary sources! Can you find another source?
