Introduction
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects both children and adults. It is characterized by symptoms such as inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. To manage these symptoms, many individuals with ADHD are prescribed medication such as stimulants or non-stimulants. While these medications can be effective in improving focus and reducing impulsive behavior, they also come with hidden dangers.
The many side effects of medicine
One common side effect of ADHD medication is appetite suppression. Stimulant medications can decrease hunger, leading to weight loss or poor growth in children. Additionally, these drugs may cause insomnia or disrupted sleep patterns, making it difficult for individuals to get adequate rest. “The prescription of stimulants for the treatment of attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is increasing among adolescents and young adults, and a new study sheds light on possible safety concerns.” (Pacs, 2021) Another significant concern is the potential for cardiovascular problems. Stimulants can increase heart rate and blood pressure, which may pose risks for individuals with pre-existing heart conditions. Regular monitoring by healthcare professionals is crucial to ensure the safe use of these medications. Psychological side
effects are also observed in some cases. These include irritability, mood swings, anxiety, and even aggression. While not everyone experiences these effects, they can be distressing for those who do.
Alternative options to ADHD medication
One such alternative option is behavioral therapy. This approach involves teaching individuals with ADHD new skills and strategies to manage their symptoms effectively. It focuses on improving organizational skills, time management, and problem-solving abilities. Behavioral therapy can also help individuals develop coping mechanisms to deal with impulsivity and hyperactivity. Another alternative option is dietary changes. Some studies suggest that certain foods or additives may exacerbate ADHD symptoms in some individuals. Eliminating or reducing the consumption of these substances, such as artificial food coloring or preservatives, may lead to a decrease in symptoms for some individuals. Exercise has also been shown to have positive effects on ADHD symptoms. Physical activity helps increase dopamine levels in the brain, which can improve focus and attention span. Engaging in regular exercise routines like yoga or aerobic activities can be beneficial for managing ADHD symptoms.
Lasting effects long term use of ADHD medicine can cause
One of the primary concerns surrounding the long-term use of ADHD medication is its impact on growth. Stimulant medications have been shown to suppress appetite, leading to weight loss and slower growth rates in children. This can result in delayed physical development and potential issues with self-esteem. Furthermore, there are concerns about the potential for addiction or dependence on these medications. Stimulants like Ritalin or Adderall can be habit-
forming if not used as prescribed. “Stimulant medications are controlled substances, which means they have a potential for abuse, though they are not considered addictive at the doses prescribed for ADHD.” (Miller & Milham 2021) Prolonged use may lead to tolerance, requiring higher doses for the same effect, which increases the risk of addiction. Another lasting effect associated with long-term use of ADHD medication is cardiovascular problems. Stimulants can
