Term Paper: As we are moving into our last novels of the semester, please start thinking about your term paper. I will expect a 8-10 page paper on a topic of your choice, based on a novel or a couple of novels of your choice from this semester's reading list. However, please make sure you differentiate the nations of the different novels. We are dealing with broad themes of society and individuals this semester, so perhaps think along these lines:  social demands on individuals, individual's ability to determine his or her trajectory in society, or social pathologies reflected through the action of individuals, etc., etc. You can do a paper on character analysis. What does this character represent in society and how is he/she described? You can do a paper on gender issues: We will end the semester with a novel by a female writer. Think about all the discuss we’ve had this semester about individual responsibility and compare that to a woman’s description of what society expects of her in our last novel. Do the values we discuss earlier in the semester still apply to women? I have noticed that a few of you have been doing a bit of research to help with your analysis of the novels in our discussion assignments and have done an excellent job of integrating what you’ve learn about these societies in your interpretation of the novels. In the term paper, I would you to use at least use two external sources to support your analysis. You can use book reviews, social and political studies of the nations you are dealing with. I know some of you are very intrigued by the protagonist in Camus’ The Foreigner. However, I will advise that you DO NOT do a psychological review. Remember, the novel is about a fictional character, deliberately created as a DEVICE by the author to say something specific about his society. His pathology is metaphorical or reflects the pathology of the society which created him. Please uses electronic resources. Use articles from the library databases JSTOR or Project Muse.: Go to CSI Library Click on Databases, choose English, Language and Literature Choose from the list JSTOR or Project Muse Type in your search topic. If you want a book review, put in the author’s name of title of novel. Or other topics: Contemporary women, Japan modern, Japanese Youth etc. I will be opening a tab for you to post your paper proposal. There will be further instructions there on who to present your proposal.
