GRA 350 Project One Design Rationale
Use this template to document the design rationale for Project One. Replace the bracketed text with your responses.
Part One: Grid Structures (Milestone One)
1.
Explain why the selected grid structures meet design needs.
●
How do the selected grid structures benefit the catalog and its readers? Explain. In preparation for creating my grid structures, first I decided to hand draw the wire frames for the entire
layout. This allowed me to brainstorm better and figure out a good plan of action for how I wanted it to look. Once I finished the wire frames, I designed my grid structure based around them. This allowed me
to create grid structures tailor made for my current design needs. The grid structures benefit the catalog and readers by providing a uniform structure and thematical element to the entire design. I wanted to focus on a professional layout first and foremost with alignment, hierarchy, unity and balance
at the forefront. I also wanted to focus on a museum theme and what a museum’s art catalog might look like so that I can appeal to the customer and their clientele.
2.
Explain how the selected grid structures enhance visual hierarchy.
●
Why is it important to follow the guidelines when using a grid system? Explain. It is important to follow hierarchy guidelines when using a grid system because this dictates your reader’s approach of viewing and their entire reading experience. How you establish hierarchy dictates
how your reader will view your material and where they will start and finish.
3.
Explain how different composition techniques were considered when creating the grid structures.
My technique for composition was to always focus on a professional layout first. This means I wanted to
establish good alignment and hierarchy of information while providing a sense of unity to the entire design by providing a thematical element across the entire catalog. Some composition techniques such as utilization of scale, space, color and texture were contemplated during the formation of these grids. In some instances, I left a modular grid structure for more freedom of placement as these techniques solidify.
Part Two: Museum Catalog (Project One)
4.
Explain how elements and principles of design were considered to present the catalog content.
●
You must address the following: balance, rhythm, scale, line, shape, and color.
When considering balance, I decided to go with an asymmetrical approach for pages 1-5. I will use imagery that will be large format that is balanced by smaller text. I believe the two will balance out by placement and contrast. For the artwork pages, I will use a more symmetrical approach that organizes the imagery and wording in a horizontal or vertical symmetry. I plan on creating a sense of rhythm by creating a central design theme throughout the entire catalog. This theme will have design traits that will look to be in rhythm through repetition. Scale will be utilized through various sizes of imagery and wording to provide visual interest. Lines will be used when necessary to provide separation for proximity. Shapes may be utilized as a thematical element such as borders for imagery while a color palette will be used to provide unity to the entire catalog.
