Pullout
Students are pulled out of their general education classroom for several periods of time throughout the week to receive small group interventions. This includes instruction and one on one learning.
The advantage of pullouts is small group work allows students to work with their teacher and work in a setting that is comfortable to them with students on the same level as them. The disadvantage can be
missing whole group instruction in class. When students miss whole group instruction it is often during other small group interventions and reading stations. Schools
often work small group interventions into a time block while the other students in class are receiving small group work time as well. Structured
English
Immersion
“The structured English immersion program is a language acquisition program for English learners in which nearly all classroom instruction is provided in English with curriculum and presentation designed for pupils who are learning English.” (
Structured English Immersion
, n.d.)
The advantage of this program is students learn and understand the concepts being taught in their new language. The disadvantage is some students can become confused learning in both languages. “As both children and
adult students learn
English, the benefit of
ESL is that
they can
communicate with
native-speaking friends
and family within the
community while
reaching out to people
who communicate only
in English. These ELLs
can bridge the gap
between their families
and the rest of the
world.” (
