How do you support and celebrate cultural diversity within instruction?
Although there are not any English language learners in our classrooms, the first step to celebrating cultural diversity is to appreciate and recognize the different backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences.
How do you leverage your home language and cultural assets?
Building opportunities in the classroom that stem from home language and cultural assets is a beneficiary. Transferring home experiences can benefit classroom development.
How do you show responsiveness to the different strengths, needs, and identities of all ELLs, including special needs?
If the student shows any strength, the teachers can capitalize on those strengths to translate into learning opportunities. Math is universal and many language learners despite their ethnicity develop math skills that can help ELL transition to learn in the classroom.
How do you demonstrate an understanding of the social, emotional, and cultural needs of students when establishing classroom routines and procedures? There are many ways to accomplish this, but the teacher can do group activities, model behavior, read together, and encourage expressing feelings. Although there are not a lot of language learners in our classrooms, they are only diverse from the Spanish language and Vietnamese language. I assist the class in some ways usually trying to identify what things are like for all the English language learners. Oftentimes times they do many things at home that are similar despite being different from each other. We usually try to incorporate things they do at home, and they tell us about it to be able to gather information to come up with proper activities for them to engage in. Amongst all the topics, Math is king when trying to transition the kids from home to the classroom and with each other.
Since math is universal, we use that to develop activities and lesson plans to better aid them in development. In our school, we like to promote different countries of origin that the kids are from. We make a passport display which is when we do small biographies about the students and their country of origin. This activity is great because it shows them, they are special and are recognized amongst the other students. I remember when I was growing up and was in ESL class, we would do food nights where we would try to get our parents to make something from our country. I know how special this made me, so I try to incorporate things like these when I engage with my students. Everything I've learned growing up and in my current students and classroom setting I will use in the future to make sure the students feel appreciated and known since I know I appreciated this.
