Topic 3 DQ 2
If content area standards are provided for every grade level, why are English language
proficiency standards necessary? How do you plan to use ELP standards as a teacher? How
would you explain what they are and why you use them to an ELL parent?
English language proficiency standards are necessary to ensure that students have a
foundation of prerequisite skills in the English language so they are able to access the
academic content.
According to the Arizona Department of Education, “ A strong
grammatical foundation is essential in the language acquisition process for ELLs.”
The ELP
standards are aligned to meet various proficiency levels across the board while meeting the
language demands in science, math, and social studies, which allows for differentiation of
instruction at the level of the ELL student.
I plan to use the ELP standards as a teacher to
ensure that my ELL students are making progress in learning the English language while
learning the content area that I teach.
When explaining what the ELP standards are and why
I use them in the classroom I would tell parents that as ELL students they are required to take
the
Assessment for English Language Acquisition (
ACCESS) in the state of Illinois every
year until they reach proficiency.
The standards will assist in ensuring that students are
making adequate progress in English and that they are receiving proper academic
instruction.
