Home and School Connections Home and School Connections Part 1: Schoolwide Event Proposal Title: Holidays around the World Description: The school will have various rooms throughout the building with different activities for various holidays throughout the world, with families moving through them at their own time line. This will include food, art activities, traditional stories, dances, and anything else that might be related to the holiday such as traditions that are celebrated. Rationale: This experience will provide an insight into various cultures of the locals that are located within the region. Experiencing different cultures including foods, arts, dances, and stories will allow the people attending to open their eyes to different cultures and be more welcoming within the school, community, and nation as a whole. Agenda: Open house style – there will be a flyer with times and locations of events that are happening. Families will be encouraged to have their “passport” stamped in order to win a variety of prizes at the end of the night for attending a minimal number of events. The drawing will be done the following day at school. Time frame: The event will be from 5pm to 8 pm with various events happening for bonus points on their “passport”. Each visit to a room will take at least 10 minutes in order to complete the activity in the room. In order to qualify for a prize you must visit at least 5 rooms or 4 rooms and a bonus activity. Setup will be from 3pm to 5 pm with families arranging the tables and chairs provided in the classroom as they need them. A welcome will be held at 5pm explaining the process of the event. This will include inviting families attending to go to individual rooms and experience new cultures. Families will have the option of what rooms to go to when, however there will be a maximum limit for each room. Near the end of the time an
Home and School Connections announcement will go out that the time is ending and the drawing will be done the next day at school. From 8pm until whenever will be pick up. Activities: Food – People contributing will either provide a way to make the food item or will already have it made of a food that is served for a holiday of their choosing that they celebrate. Stories – The parents will read a book that represents their culture or a background that they want to share with everyone having to do with a holiday. Dance – Anyone sharing a traditional dance to a specific culture will teach a simplified version of that dance that will not take many steps but will still reach the meaning of the dance. Arts – Arts will be taught while explaining the culture and meaning of the activity. It will be a simple object that can be completed in 20 minutes or less. Extra – This will include anything that administration excluded unknowingly that parents and communities members want to share about their cultures. Equipment: Each room will be provided tables and chairs. Participants will provide their own books for stories, materials for arts, food for snacks created or provided, and anything extra that administration might have forgotten, Supplies: The school will supply the tables and chairs for each room. If anything else is needed then it will be supplied by the participant. This includes food, art supplies, and books. Part 2: Cultural Connections This activity will allow everyone from the community to experience different cultural influences by seeing the various activities that are available within the school, while individualizing each culture. It will support cultural influences by making sure that cultural competence and social-emotional needs are met. Having families share their cultural beliefs
