GE 102 Introduction to Engineering I
Assignment 1.1
Natural Science Term Assignment
Due: Dec 7, 2022, 10:00 pm in Crowdmark
Assignment Type: B+
RLOs Assessed:
1.6 compare and contrast the focus and perspectives of biology, chemistry, physics, geology,
mathematics, and computer science
Assignment Details
Many people all over the world cancelled their travels and limited their activities in 2020 due to
the coronavirus pandemic. How much do you think this has helped slow the rate of climate change?
The news published by CNBC in August of 2021 showed surprising and heart-breaking facts that
“2020 saw the highest concentration of greenhouse gases in Earth’s atmosphere ever recorded,
along with unprecedented global sea levels and average global temperatures.” (Newburger, 2021)
The Department of Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) would like to form a team
of experts to lead a project to investigate the causes and consequences of climate change. A
committee (i.e. your study squad) will need to submit a proposal to ECCC to persuade them to
invite experts in Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geology, Mathematics, and Computer
Science to create a team to address this problem. The proposal should also include and provide
professional direction on:
A brief summary of the parameters scientists use to measure the extent of climate change.
What are the roles of each expert group in this project?
What are the sources of the relevant greenhouse gases?
What are the preliminary findings about the causes and consequences of climate change
from the perspectives of each expert group?
What will be the benefit of collaborating across expert groups?
What other fields of study should the group consult with?
What further investigations are recommended?
Assignment Logistics
Each member of the study squad should take responsibility for one aspect of the project and
contribute equally.
This means that study squad members can contribute as the team leader, the
organizer, conducting research in one or more areas, writing one or more areas of the proposal,
editing the final document, etc. The proposal should be complete and well organized. Your
deliverable should be typed using a font size of 11 or 12, 1.5 spacing, and margins of at least 1
inch on all edges. The proposal should be 5-7 pages, plus a cover page (see the template), the
references, and any applicable appendices. Note that space taken up by figures does not need to be
included in the page count. All references and citations should follow the 7
th
edition of the APA
Publication Manual requirements (these will be introduced and explained in GE132). Each team

should save the proposal as a PDF file and submit it to Crowdmark by the due date. Be sure to add
all participating members of your study squad.
Any members not included in the Crowdmark
submission will not receive credit for completion of the assignment.
