Evaluating Historical Sources Worksheet
Use the four sources (two primary, two secondary) you located for this assessment to complete
this worksheet. Your four sources should focus on one of two topics: facing economic change or
engaging civil rights. For each source, first provide a formatted citation, as shown in the sample
citation below. Double click into the citation box to type your citation. Then answer each
question about that source. Respond to questions 3–8 in complete sentences.
Sample formatted citation:
Citation for Source 1:
1.
What type of source is this (primary or secondary)?
Primary. Written as a first hand
experience with self-conducted research.
2.
When was it written?
1963
3.
Why was it written?
To address “a problem with no name” being faced by millions of
women worldwide at a time that was normal for women to fade into the backgrounds of
society.
4.
What is the main idea or takeaway?
There was a change that many were looking to
change but did not know how to face or address the issues that women would be
subjected to well into the foreseeable future. Women should be seen and not heard,
happy that a man chose them to be at home with the privilege of taking care of children.
5.
Was the writer present at the time of the events he or she was writing about?
Yes.
Author was a victim of the exact socioeconomic issues she studied and lived through
seeing how she as a scholar and having children led to her discrimination in the
workplace which ultimately led to her termination as this was a time when pregnancy
was looked at as an illness for white women.
6.
Does the writer seem neutral? Why/why not?
Friedan is VERY biased. But two things
can be true at once. She is writing from a place of emotion based on her personal
experience, this does not negate the fact that all women faced the disparities spoken on
during the feminist movement.
7.
What are some of the key facts presented?
Friedan spoke to the fact that women after
the war were almost forced into wife and motherhood with returning soldiers. The fact
that these women were able to find and pursue passions with a society that had little
men interference for a time is pivotal to note because they were not only pursuing
nursing careers. Surely not just being mothers either. Jobs that were one day mens work
became the burden of women to fill. These women did not want to return to meek lives

of just mothering children after having had a taste of freedom so to speak. The desire to
pursue education and trades became a driving force when women were urged to fall
shadow to the returning men.
8.
Explain why this source is credible.
Friedan researched this issue herself, lived it herself
and then wrote on the findings of said research. She used time-appropriate methods to
conduct the research and the findings although bias were and are relevant.
