The Homeless and Their Children
Discussion Questions
1.
As Kozol introduces readers to Laura, he begins to identify the many problems that Laura’s faces.
What exactly are the many challenges that Laura encounters?
Ans) Laura faces various challenges. Some of the challenges she encounters include
homelessness, poverty, illiteracy, limited access to education and job opportunities, and the
struggle to provide for her children in difficult circumstances.
2.
Describe your intellectual and emotional reaction to Kozol’s article. What information surprised
you? Provide specific examples from the text to support your response. How did Kozol’s essay
make you feel about this problem?
Ans) The information that surprised me was compelling stories of homeless individuals,
particularly Laura. Kozol’s essay made me feel sympathy for the homeless people regarding their
issues such as illiteracy, specifically Laura and the struggles she faces raising her children.
3.
The purpose of informative writing is to give information without editorializing or arguing for or
against a solution. In which paragraphs does Kozol remain most objective and unemotional?
Which passages reveal Kozol’s sympathy for Laura’s situation? Does he avoid editorializing?
Ans) He is most objective and unemotional when he is stating facts and statistics. Kozol’s
sympathy for Laura’s situations reveal when he is talking about Laura’s struggles in life. He does
avoid editorializing a little bit when he is talking about the different difficulties Laura faces.
4.
Reread the essay, noticing those places where Laura’s illiteracy causes her problems. Based on
your findings, explain how her illiteracy, rather than her poverty, causes or magnifies her
problems.
Ans) Laura's illiteracy can cause or magnify her problems in various ways. For instance, it can
limit her ability to access job opportunities that require reading and writing skills. Illiteracy can
also make it difficult for her to navigate social services, complete job applications, or help her
children with their education. In contrast, poverty is a broader issue that may lead to
homelessness and can be interconnected with illiteracy, but it is not the direct cause of her
inability to read or write.
5.
Describe the investigative techniques that Kozol used to write his essay. In addition to his
interviews with Laura, what were his other probable sources of information?
Ans) Jonathan Kozol used a combination of investigative techniques to write his essay such as
including in-person interviews with Laura and other homeless individuals, field observations,
document research, and possibly interviews with social workers, educators, and experts in the
field of homelessness. He might have also used official reports and data to support his claims.
6.
Where in the essay could Kozol include more information or statistics? What additional
information would you like to know after reading his essay?
Ans) Kozol could include a history of the hotel that keeps the homeless people where he is
talking about his visit to New York city.
I would like to know how long the hotel has been
keeping homeless people there.
