First, identify your chosen term (realism or naturalism) and summarize its salient
features as described in one of the videos from Modules 2 or 3.
II. Second, identify your chosen literary text (from Modules 2 or 3) and explain briefly
how its features exemplify your chosen term.
III. Third, craft a thesis statement that pulls these pieces together to make your claim
(basically, answer this question: How does the video define [realism or naturalism], and
how does [your chosen literary text] exemplify these features?)
IV. Fourth, break your thesis statement into about 3 subpoints, the ideas you’ll have to
develop to make your case. These subpoints will become your outline, so turn them into
complete sentences by answering the question: What do I need to explain about this
subpoint to define realism or naturalism or to show how that literary form is manifested in
this literary text? Now flesh out your outline by adding evidence from the video and
literary text to support your subpoints. Retype your thesis statement and type your outline
below:

I have chose to write about Realism.
According to the video found in week two, "Introduction to American Literary Realism"
realism is described as being the opposite of Romanticism. Realism is described as being something that a neighbor may tell
you or something that is mundane.
Reaism is exhibited through the realistic small town setting in Missouri.
Realism often focuses on the working class that the reader can relate to based on the majority.
The small town represented in the story is a realistic view of humanity.
Realism is depicted in this story through actions and motives of characters that prove to be reasonable and plausible.
The characters in "Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog" depicted realism effectively throughout the entire piece of literature.
Jim Smiley is an honest hardworking person that cares about doing the right thing.
Simon Wheeler is an elderly man that lives a simple life in a small town who loves to talk and tell stories.
Conclusion
Simon Wheeler has a lot of characteristics and traits that support and depict Realism throughout the literature, "Jim
Smiley and His Jumping Frog".
This story consists of a man that comes from the East and visits a common mining camp that is relatable to readers.
Smiley is a gambler
which matches his desire to make bets. Wheeler is a talkative individual who enjoys telling stories,
so his place as narrator fits his personality well.
Realism is practiced in Mark Twain's, "Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog" through the real life
setting and characters that depict real life characteristics and story line as defined in week two's video, "Introduction
to American Leterary Realism".
Jim Smiley has a lot of characteristics and traits that support and depict Realism throughout the literature, "Jim Smiley and His Jumping

It takes place in a "real" small county in Missouri where the working class was adequately represented.
