Interview I had the opportunity to interview a teacher who works in a school with a UPK class. We talked about how she addresses language form and language function in her classroom. She said that in her classroom she teaches everything in English. They work on simple vocabulary words, an example she gave was when they work on colors they label objects that are that color, same with shapes and counting. She mentioned that if students need to use the bathroom she will say the word in their language, sometimes they use google translate when a student is crying and she can't understand why. She has also used the ELL teacher as a resource when a students is having a hard time. Sometimes she will have students point to items instead of saying the name if they are not sure of the English word. Next I asked her how she addresses the relationship between verbal and written expression in her classroom. She said that in her classroom they draw for written expression, it is the same for all students. Drawing line are -, + and 0 are universal. Her ELL students talk to each other in Spanish and will answer some of her questions in Spanish, she just doesn't understand what they are saying. I asked what strategies she implements to support the various language needs of ELLs, she uses Google translate and will point to objects and she will say the English word. We talked about how she provides ELLs with content area instruction that meets grade level expectations, She said they work on vocabulary words saying 4 or 5 word sentences for all students. Next we discussed how does she effectively communicate with the ELL families, she said that paperwork is sent home in Spanish for them to complete. All information is translated that goes home to the families. At open house they have an interpreter present. During the month she communicated through Seesaw, which translates the words. Finally we talked about if she includes the families on making goals for their children or do they come up with strategies that 2
