EDUC 5711: TEACHING FOR DIVERSE AND INCLUSIVE CLASSROOMS
Dr. Krista Ganga
2
School districts vary in how they setup their classes for instruction.
Some classes have
students of similar academic ability in the same classroom while others have a mixed range of
academic abilities in their classroom.
When a teacher is responsible for teaching students of
various abilities they need to implement techniques and groupings to organize students and
effectively teach them.
Trying to instruct all of the students simultaneously is very stressful and impractical in
some cases in a classroom.
In the subject of reading, it is useful to divide the students into small
groups which can allow the teacher to more effectively teach them.
The small groups can be
divided into ability groups with appropriate reading material.
When dealing with students of
different abilities, they should not be doing the same assignment.
The learning materials needs
to be adjusted according the ability of the students (Cohen & Barzyk, 2015). An example of this
could studying
Beowulf
in which advanced students read the poem in Old English while the
remaining students read a translation. This allows the material to be adapted according to the
student’s ability while still educating them.
Along with adapting the material, the students may
also be grouped according to their ability level (Ford, 2005).
Doing either alone does not
sufficiently allow the student to learn.
Students learn in a variety of styles, and as a teacher we need to have materials adapted to
various styles. Part of teaching is preparing students for society and adult life.
Students need to
be exposed to a variety of different learning methods/styles because as students mature learning
will not be all lecture style. Students will encounter learning methods from online learning,
demonstration, practical trial and error, reading and listening as a few examples (Ford, 2005).
This is even more prevalent today as we are dealing with various types of learning due to Covid
pandemic. It has been difficult adapting material for online learning as well as having flexible
3
groupings in the classroom.
I have found it very difficult utilize peer teaching and peer learning
due to the constraints of implemented technology.
I have adjusted the learning environment in
which similar ability groupings from different classes are combined.
This allows me to have
everyone of a similar ability being taught together.
This is not the most ideal situation but as this
point it is a practical one.
In response to teachers struggling to be as effective as possible,
Fridays will be ½ days to allow us to work with the program and other teachers on
