My Reflection on Academic and Personal Growth in ENG 150
At the start of the semester, when I first walked into the class ENG 150, I have to
admit, I had a few concerns regarding my current writing skills at the time and became
worried on how this course would apply to me and help me become a better writer. I always
believed that good writing was mostly about having really good grammar and not being
influenced by my personal opinions in different aspects of my writing. However, then came
Marilyn Arnold's "Unlocking the Sacred Text." Arnold has a really impressive background in
English literature, and she's finished some really amazing work at BYU. As I have studied
her take on how literary skills can really deepen our understanding of texts has been a really
big change for me. It’s made me see that writing's not just about following the strict rules, but
actually about being able to dig deeper, finding new meanings, and really connecting with
what you're reading and writing about.
At the start of the semester in ENG 150, my approach to writing was somewhat very
simple. I always believed good writing primarily came from perfect grammar and having a
structured format. This course, however, brought a very significant shift to my perspective. It
opened my eyes to the fact that writing goes beyond just following given guidelines. It's
about creating an engaging narrative and effectively connecting with your audience. This
newfound understanding was a real game-changer for me, helping me reshape my beliefs and
a few of my approaches to writing and allowing me to be more creative and expressive, and

showing me that there’s more to writing than crafting words together but allowing myself to
learn how to express myself in away that has its own uniqueness that goes far beyond the idea
of just writing for just grammatical perfection.
Furthermore, as the semester continued to move along in ENG 150, my initial writing
strategy began to change. I had always thought the secret key to becoming good at writing
was to keep everything neat and follow the established rules. However, I came to realize that
becoming an effective communicator involves much more depth and attention to detail. It's
about creating an emotional connection with the reader and being able to articulate my
scattered ideas with clarity, and at times, stepping beyond the boundaries of standard norms.
This course has instilled in me the importance of being able to think critically for myself,
challenging me to immerse myself deeper than surface-level information, to question,
analyze, and to be able to form my own unique opinions. This deeper approach as I have
incorporated it into my writing has opened a new way of writing for me, where it's not just
about the rules, but about the impact and how I convey my message to the audience.
Continuing, one of the many significant lessons I've learned throughout this semester
is the importance of using credible sources into my writing. L. Lennie Irvin's "What Is
'Academic' Writing?" helped me understand a bigger picture of writing in this regard.
Through studying and reading his writing his unique perspective on academic writing
standards not only was able to enhance my understanding of how I use sources and apply
them into my writing but also it has helped me continue to appreciate the value of supporting
my ideas and being able to tie it in with credible evidence and sources. As Irvin highlights,
academic writing is about making a point and supporting it with well-researched information
(4). As I have been able to better learn, the concept of being able to articulate my own
thoughts while being able to combine it with credible sources will continue to be able to
