Subject: Simplifying and Supporting the Generation Z Journey to Financial Wealth
Date: November 3rd, 2022
Recommendation: Incorporating WS investment management program in schools
Inflation is continuing to cause a rapid increase in food prices, house prices and much more. Canadian students fear making the wrong financial decisions and remain anxious about their future but Wealthsimple can aid students by implementing a unique university/college certificate offered at the institution based on the incorporation of their pre-existing investment management program. This strategy
is projected to capture 70% of post-secondary students in Canada annually for the next five years.
Decision Criteria and Alternatives:
1.
Cost-effective implementation of recommendation resulting in high return on investment
2.
Help Gen-Z students make better financial choices, through better use of financial tools
3.
Capture a majority of students from multiple universities across Canada
Analysis:
Cost-effective implementation of recommendation resulting in high return on investment
Having a pre-existing investment management program, Wealthsimple wouldn’t have to spend thousands designing new program content as they can simply use similar parts from their existing program and change a few things to cater towards Gen-Z. There would also be powerful marketing to ensure that students are hearing about the program such as school emails and advertisements on social media promoting Wealthsimple. Alongside this, brand recognition from a name like Wealthsimple would attract Canadian universities to want to start a partnership as potential profit would incentivize them. The
students would be attracted by the desire to be on a good financial path to success. Approximately 80% of
students wish they learned about investment and financial management.
Help Gen-Z students make better financial choices, through better use of financial tools
Since Wealthsimple is known to be user-friendly and keeping it simple, students who are new to investing
and naive about online investing and finance won’t be faced with massive struggles trying to learn as a beginner. Furthermore, Wealthsimple will go through the basics of financial and investment management with a focus on its products, Wealthsimple invest, Wealthsimple cash, Wealthsimple trade, Wealthsimple crypto and Wealthsimple tax. Low threat of new entrants helps retain new customers
Since Wealthsimple would be the first major fin-tech company to implement this sort of plan, they would be way ahead of the game. While having major capital intensity, high economies of scale and their unique
brand identity, there also wouldn’t be much of a threat from other companies. Wealthsimple would have already conquered the universities before its competitors would have a chance to imitate them. Additionally, students would be attracted to the reputation and big name that Wealthsimple already has which will make them less inclined to switch companies, causing low churn rates.
Implementation Plan
Month 1: Create the Wealthsimple certificate program made up of 8 classes to evenly distribute all of the needed knowledge to operate Wealthsimple efficiently and be more comfortable making financial decisions online.
Month 2: Pitch idea to a university explaining how the program could fit alongside other extra-curricular certificate programs they offer and how learning from Wealthsimple can aid with student’s future financial endeavours. The university would have to promote the program through newsletters and emails
