Crater Related Extinctions Activity A: Identifying extinction events. The first part of this assignment is to identify extinction events that have occurred on earth. 1. Create a table that contains the following information: Note: do not fill in part C data until after activity B Name of Extinction Event Age/Time Period Possible Impact (cause) Ordovician- Silurian 443 million years ago, -La Moinerie -Couture -Pilot -Hummmeln Devonian 374 million years ago, Late Devonian Period -West Hawk -Flynn Creek -Silijan -Ilyinets Great Die-out 250 million years ago End of Permian Period -Suvasvesi S -Kursk -Araguainha Triassic_ Jurassic 252- 201 million years ago -red wing -Wells Creek -Manicouagan -Saint Martin End-Cretaceous 65.5 million years ago End- cretaceous period -Chicxulub -Boltysh -Tin Bider -Ouarkziz -Chukcha
Activity B : Using the link below , create a visual representation of how often the Earth has been hit by objects of various sizes. Activity C: Creating scientific relationships is the key to identifying the history of the earth. Now sort the impact data to age. Find the craters that occurred around when the five extinctions occurs on earth. Return to activity A and fill in part C of the data table. There could have been more than one impact in this part of the table. Activity D: Using this source and extra sources (2 or more) find out about the event(s) that could have caused the extinction of the dinosaurs. Tell, where and when this event is supposed to have happened, and what evidence we have for it. As usual, cite your sources. At least 250 words. The last known major extinction, the End-Cretaceous Extinction, was the extinction that killed off the dinosaurs. It happened 65.5 million years ago. According to the source provided, this extinction could have been caused by the following impacts: Chicxulub, Boltysh, Tin Bider, Ouarkziz, or Chukcha. According to an article on Earth.org by Olivia Lai, "There is strong geological evidence that the demise of dinosaurs and the fifth mass extinction event are caused by an asteroid that was as large as 10 km in diameter hitting the Earth, specifically in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico." This impact produced a dust cloud that encircled the planet and prevented sunlight from reaching Earth's surface, thereby reducing the plants and plankton's ability to photosynthesis and affecting the rest of the food chain. According to an article from the Natural History Museum by Sam Rae " Evidence suggests an asteroid impact was the main culprit. Volcanic eruptions that caused large-scale climate change may also have been involved, together with more gradual changes to Earth's climate that happened over millions of years." While it is universally believed that an impact was the reason the dinosaurs met their demise, its exact play-by-play and effect on the planet is still up for speculation.
