Wind Power: An Energy Resource for the Future (Homework Assignment – 20pts) Background Wind energy is growing in the United States and worldwide. In the United States, the capacity for electricity generation from wind power increased by 517% in the 7 years from 2005 to 2012. Globally, wind power grew 22% in 2015 alone. Overall, wind power is a leading source of renewable energy , that which is collected from resources that renew, or replenish, themselves naturally over a short time scale. Transitioning toward renewable energy and away from fossil fuels is essential to reducing air pollution and the greenhouse gas emissions linked to climate change. Wind power converts the kinetic energy in atmospheric wind to the mechanical energy of rotating wind turbines that produce electricity. Because wind results from the uneven heating of the surface on Earth, wind energy is essentially a form of solar energy. Wind is a renewable resource because increasing use of wind for energy production will not deplete the supply. Wind energy is clean, meaning that it does not produce pollution or greenhouse gases, and is widely available. Instructions Part A. (1pt each) In the table below, describe how wind energy compares to other renewable resources in each of the areas listed . In each box, provide a comparison of wind energy to the energy listed in the area provided. Place information in your own words and do not simply copy/paste from online websites. The GSU plagiarism detector (Turnitin) will be enabled for this assignment, to allow me to determine whether responses have been simply cut and paste. You may widen each response box to fit your responses. Be sure to cite your references below the table of where you located your information for full credit . Solar Energy Hydroelectric Power Geothermal Energy Biomass Energy Power Generated (The amount of energy produced) About 1300 Ttwh was generated in 2022 compared to about 2100 twh of wind energy (the most abundant renewable resource) 4300 twh was generated in 2022 compared to about 2100 twh of wind energy in 2022 about 17 billion kwh was generated in 2022 compared to about 2100 twh of wind energy in 2022 About 4,930 trillion TBtu was generated in 2022 compared to about 2100 twh of wind energy in 2022
Cost and Investment Cost has declined in the last decade and the investment is about 30 years per solar panel. Wind energy has low maintenance costs but is more expensive to create initially. The cost is lowering though. Currently largest source of renewable energy. Wind energy has low maintenance costs but is more expensive to create initially. The cost is lowering though Most reliable, over 100 years old, can cost over 40,000 for a home system. Wind energy has low maintenance costs but is more expensive to create initially. The cost is lowering though Biomass is expensive, the most expensive source. Wind energy has low maintenance costs but is more expensive to create initially. The cost is lowering though Environmental Impact (The environmental impact that the energy sources have on their surroundings) Can be harnessed in cloudy weather. Wind has no carbon emissions or air pollutants but can affect birds environments and is less productive in less windy areas. Relies on stable rainfall, can negatively impact ecosystems, smaller scale is better Wind has no carbon emissions or air pollutants but can affect birds environments and is less productive in less windy areas Geothermal seems to have more cons than pros in this category. It has air and water pollution, hazardous waste and uses a lot of water. Wind has no carbon emissions or air pollutants but can affect birds environments and is less productive in less windy areas Creates greenhouse gas emissions, could result in deforestation. Wind has no carbon emissions or air pollutants but can affect birds environments and is less productive in less windy areas Visual Appeal (The appearance/appeal of the energy source) Solar panels are smaller than wind turbines, which makes them easier to fit in more places. Wind is everywhere and water isn’t. Wind energy can be used in more places, making wind energy more appealing. Geothermal energy looks like any other plant, which has negative connotations, whereas wind energy providers are easily recognizable as renewable energy. This one can be gross as animal poop is one source of biomass energy, much less appealing than wind energy. .
