Answer all of the questions below. Use course concepts and terms in your answers.
1.
Using Mars as an example, explain how weather and climate are different. (2 marks)
Weather is considered the state of the atmosphere at a particular time, usually describing
temperature, wind or precipitation. On Mars one example of weather would be that Mars does
have seasons, though they vary greatly from what we experience here on Earth. The length of a
Martian spring is 194 days, summer is 178 days, autumn is 142 days and winter is 154 days
(Mars' atmosphere: Facts about composition and climate, 2023). Climate is considered the
average weather conditions prevailing over a place over a long period of time. On Mars and
example of climate would be that the average temperature on Mars is about -60°C.
2.
In one sentence, what is the main difference in the career of a meteorologist and a
climatologist? (1 mark)
The main difference between in the career of a meteorologist and a climatologist is that a
meteorologist studies short term weather patterns and a climatologist studies long-term weather
patterns (climate).
3.
Explain how knowing the class average lets you make a "relative" comparison of your
work with the class. (1 mark)
Knowing the class average helps you make a relative comparison of your work with the class
because it allows you to compare whether your mark is above or below the class average. You
can then use this comparison to judge how well you are doing in the class in comparison to your
peers.
4.
Which location would have lower air pressure? Explain why. (2 marks)
a.
Thun, Switzerland
b.
Engelberg, Switzerland
Engelberg, Switzerland would have a lower air pressure than Thun, Switzerland. This is due to
Engelberg having a higher altitude of 3301 feet (Worldwide Elevation Finder, 2023) while Thun
only has an elevation of 1841 feet (Worldwide Elevation Finder, 2023). As altitude rises, air
pressure drops therefore Engelberg would have lower air pressure.
5.
Give three ways that carbon moves through the Geosphere and the Biosphere. (3 marks)
One way that carbon moves through the Geosphere to the Biosphere is through photosynthesis;
the process where plants use sunlight, water and CO
2
to create oxygen and energy.
Another way that carbon moves through the Geosphere and the Biosphere is through the physical
weathering process which returns carbon to water and the atmosphere
A third way that carbon moves through the Geosphere and the Biosphere is through burning or
combustion.
6.
Why do global carbon dioxide levels rise from December to March and fall from May to
August? (1 mark)
Carbon dioxide levels rise from December to March and fall from May to August due to plants
absorbing a more substantial amount of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through
photosynthesis during the spring and summer in comparison to the winter.
7.
Convert the list below. (3 marks)
1 degree Celsius into kelvin
i.
1°C = 274.15°K
29 degrees Celsius into kelvin
i.
29°C = 302.15°K
-14 degrees Celsius into kelvin
i.
-14°C = 259.15°K
