Report
GHY 1011 Global Climate Change Temperature Change and Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide Name Landon Beard Assignment (*use the file Lab5_temp_CO2_lab_report.docx to compose your lab report. Before submitting the report in the ASUlearn submission portal, rename the file in the following fashion: Lastname_firstinitial_Lab5_temp_CO2_lab_report.docx ) Part I: Examining the relationship between CO 2 and Global/Local temperature and between Global and Local temperature and time 1. Develop hypotheses on the relationship between atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations and surface temperatures (anomalies) for the globe and your selected local region. Also, develop hypotheses on the relationships between Time and Global temperature anomalies and between Time and Local temperature anomalies (four hypotheses total – each in the form of a complete sentence). (8 points) I predict that the global surface temperature anomalies will see a steady growth as carbon dioxide concentrations slowly increase through years. I predict that the local surface temperatures for my selected region will see a variation as changing seasons will change the CO2 amounts in the region. I predict that as time increases, the global temperature anomalies will have higher temperatures with a continuous rise. I predict that as time increases, the local temperature anomalies will have various temperatures that will show a continuous increase in temperature.
2. Examine the relationships graphically. In Excel, create a time series graph showing the relationship between both global and local surface temperature anomalies and time. Include a copy of this graph in your lab report (you can cut and paste from Excel to Word). (10 points) (*paste the graphic you created in Excel here) 3. Which temperature anomaly shows greater variability from year to year, the global or local (Idaho Division 1)? (1 point) The local temperature anomaly has greater variability.
4. Why might that be the case? (2 points) The position of the state within the United States gives Idaho a wider range of temperatures as the seasons come and go; we can see within the graph at the constant change from Idaho at great variations, meaning that the changing seasons brought changes in CO2 levels with the growth of trees and leaves. Examine the following relationships by reviewing the Statistical Output document. Time + global temperature anomalies Time + regional temperature anomalies CO 2 + Global temperature anomalies CO 2 + Regional temperature anomalies Global Temperature anomalies + Regional temperature anomalies 5. After examining the correlation values between these variables and the associated scatterplots for the following five relationships, provide both the correlation ( r-value) and the significance ( p-value) for these relationships in your lab report. (5 points) (list them here – you must retype them, do NOT just cut and paste from the statistical output provided)
