In suburban Cook County, 59.3% of adults and 40% of third-grade students are
overweight or obese. Poor diet and physical inactivity are established risk factors for
obesity. In Cook County, three in four adults do not eat the recommended amount of
fresh fruits and vegetables, and most adults are not physically active.
If healthy options are not available, then healthy living is not possible. With the support
of the CPPW initiative, suburban Cook County has implemented a variety of changes
throughout the community to make healthy living easier.
To decrease the prevalence of obesity, suburban Cook County:
Increased access to affordable, nutritious food in 21 corner stores located in eight
under-resourced municipalities. Approximately 239,000 residents will benefit from
the increased availability of fresh produce.

Stats
The national prevalence of obese children are: 8.9% of children ages 2-5, 17.5% of children ages 6-
11, and 20.5 of children ages 12-19 (Ogden et al 2014).
Chicago communities for which we have data have extremely high obesity prevalence rates. The
predominately white community in the sample (Norwood Park) had much lower rates compared to
other communities that are predominantly Black and Hispanic.
Child obesity rates in children of all ages were highest among Black and Hispanic communities for
both boys and girls.

Chicago, meanwhile, shows low occurrences of obesity along the lake and to the
north, with several small pockets of red extending out of the city along
Interstate 90 and much larger areas of increased obesity to the west and south
along Lake Michigan.

Additionally, 22% of 3-7 year old children residing in Chicago are obese (
CLOCC
, 2008), and
40% of children residing in Cook County, Illinois are considered obese or overweight (
CDC
)

From 2010-2014, 24.3% of Lake County residents were considered obese and 38.7% were
considered overweight.

Lake County still has a lower rate of adult obesity by this method (weighted 22.5%) than Illinois
(29.4%)18 and the national rate (34.9%).19 Another 34.4% of adults are overweight, bringing the
total of adults who are overweight or obese and at higher risk for chronic diseases up to 57.1%.
