Over half the adults in SCC is overweight or obese – which is more than the entire population of Montana. 1 About 40 percent of children are overweight or obese. http://www.cookcountypublichealth.org/files/pdf/state%20of%20obesity_032210_bw.pdf In suburban Cook County, 59.3% of adults and 40% of third-grade students are overweight or obese. Poor diet and physical inactivity are established risk factors for obesity. In Cook County, three in four adults do not eat the recommended amount of fresh fruits and vegetables, and most adults are not physically active. If healthy options are not available, then healthy living is not possible. With the support of the CPPW initiative, suburban Cook County has implemented a variety of changes throughout the community to make healthy living easier. To decrease the prevalence of obesity, suburban Cook County: Increased access to affordable, nutritious food in 21 corner stores located in eight under-resourced municipalities. Chicago communities for which we have data have extremely high obesity prevalence rates. The predominately white community in the sample (Norwood Park) had much lower rates compared to other communities that are predominantly Black and Hispanic. Weight status represents a health challenge for the majority of adults in Lake County.
