I come from Southern New Mexico. One of the most common hazards in this area is floods.
Owing to the climate of this area, we usually experience flash floods. These floods can occur
in any month. However, the threat of flooding increases in May and June, or during the severe
weather season.
As can be seen in the map, some of the areas that frequently experience flash floods include
White Sands, Radium Springs, Alvarado, Chaparral, Afton, and Santo Tomas. The flashfloods
usually cause significant damage to infrastructural facilities in the area. The damage is usually
in the form of ripped off building walls, damaged power lines, and damage to roads and
communication lines.
My experience was this tool was at a basic level. It was my first time using the tool. However,
I found it important when one needs to give an overview of a geographical area and its
resources as well as to identify an area’s Critical Infrastructure and Key Resources (CIKRs). I
will use this tool again in the future to identify a geographical area affected by natural
hazards, such as earthquake, severe storms, flooding, and others.
