GLY 3105C – Lab 9 – Geologic Maps
Part 1: Reading a Geologic Map
We will use the Lake Louise, Canada geologic map. Note that Canadian maps use a different
scale than do US Geological Survey maps. Use Geologic Map 1 and Cross Section 1 (separate
downloads) to answer the questions on the answer sheet.
Part A: Map Information
1.
What are the contour intervals on this map?
2.
How would you identify a glacier versus a lake on this map?
3.
What is the scale of this map? ____________________________
Part B: Cross-Sections
Find the two cross-section lines. Look at the northernmost cross-section between points labeled
“6.”
1.
What is the highest point along this line? __
2.
What is the name of one prominent mountain along this cross-section?
3.
What is the elevation of the lowest point along this line?
4.
What is the total relief along the line of this cross-section?
____________________________________________________________
Part C: Stratigraphic Column
The Burgess Shale quarry locality is labeled with an F. It occurs north of the town of Field, to the
west of Mount Field.
1.
What is the name of this formation?
2.
What is its color?
3.
What is its map symbol?
2
4.
What is its rock type?
5.
What is the general strike of this unit?
6.
What is the general dip of this unit?
Look another unit either stratigraphically below or above the Burgess Shale location.
7.
What is the name of this formation?
8.
What is its color?
9.
What is its map symbol?
10. What is its rock type?
11. What is the general strike of this unit?
12. What is the general dip of this unit?
13. Which of these two formations is thicker?
14. Which of these is made of resistant rocks?
Part 2: Interpretation of Geologic Features from Geologic Maps
We will use several large scale geologic maps over the Midwest/ west of the United States to
address the questions on the answer sheet, using the maps referenced in parentheses.
Download the Lab 9 Part 2 PDF for these maps.
1.
Stable Interior of the United States (See pages 250 – 251)
A. A large oval patch of dark blue fills the center of this map (Unit Cc). What is the
structure represented in this blue area and the strata surrounding it?
3
B. Why do units Ca, Cpw, and Cpm appear and disappear adjacent to the north- east part
of the structure in A?
C. Why is the dark blue unit D in the lower left hand area of the structure cut by the bright
yellow band (Unit Qa) (meaning what does the Qa unit represent)?
2.
Stable Interior of the United States (See pages 252-253)
A. The state of Michigan is cut in half by the north edge of this map, so that you see half
of a tectonic structure. Describe/ name this structure.
B. Why are the color patterns disrupted by a straight line near Howe and Lansing,
Michigan (in the upper middle of the map)?
C. Draw a line (real or invisible) between and the I in OHIO and Lansing, Michigan (in
the upper middle of the map). What type of structure is found along this line? Use the
relative ages of the rocks in the legend to guide you.
3.
Stable Interior of the United States (See pages 254-255)
A. A large pink patch (Unit O1) dominates the lower half of this map. What type of
structure produced the pattern seen here?
B. Explain what might cause the ‘tree-like’ or ‘antler-shaped’ olive green patterns seen on
top of the pink units.
4.
Stable Interior of the United States (See pages 256-257)
A. Locate the structure centered on the cities of Nashville and Lebanon, Tennessee (Unit
Om, at the bottom of the map). What is this structure?
