CVA Environmental Science Module 4 – Types of Ecosystems: Biomes E4.02.1 Impacts of Climate Change on Living Organisms Purpose To observe how individual organisms are uniquely adapted to the biomes in which they live by testing how certain organisms respond to changes in one of the primary characteristics of a biome: temperature. **Note: The lab has already been conducted. Your job is to analyze the data presented below! Materials Completed 3 Styrofoam egg cartons 18 lettuce seeds which is a Cool Weather Plant (CWP) and 18 squash seeds which is a Warm Weather Plant (WWP) Potting soil Refrigerator Incubator (or sunny window if no incubator available) Procedures Completed 1. Add potting soil to all the egg cartons. 2. Place CWP seeds in six wells of each egg carton and WWP seeds in the remaining 6 wells of each egg carton. 3. Place one egg carton in a refrigerator, one egg carton in an incubator, and leave one egg carton at room temperature. 4. Record the number of seeds that germinate every 2 days at each temperature. 5. Check pots every two days until the seeds germinate and record your observations each day. Data Table
CVA Environmental Science Module 4 – Types of Ecosystems: Biomes E4.02.1 Impacts of Climate Change on Living Organisms Analysis Questions & Answers 1. Which of the seed types germinated best in the cool environment? 2. Which of the seed types germinated the best in the warm environment? 3. In which environment did the most seeds germinate? 4. Based upon your observations, do you think that temperature affects the germination of seeds? Explain your answer in detail. 5. Based upon what you have learned, does temperature impact the different plants that grow in different biomes? Support your answer with examples. Extension Activity Follow the link below and complete the chart as you explore the biomes. Notice the differences in temperatures, plants, and animals. To use the interactive, Select ‘Start Interactive’. Click and hold the globe to spin it and explore different parts of the world. Click and release a spot on the globe to drop a pin there to see a summary of the characteristics of the biome for that location.
