During the COVID-19 pandemic air pollution levels were decreased due to everyone being on lockdown. The air pollution levels were reduced, and it led to the Himalayan glaciers melting at a slower rate. Reducing current air pollution levels like those during the COVID- 19 pandemic can help protect the Himalayan glaciers from disappearing. Reducing air pollution levels can help decrease the amount of snow melting from the glaciers daily. Before reading this article, I knew that the Himalayan glaciers were being affected by climate change. I also know that some communities rely on the Himalayan glaciers for their water supply. Climate change has affected the Earth and many of Earth's glaciers from human pollution. Climate change is affected by the air that humans on Earth are polluting. After reading the selected article I would like to know how long it can increase the Himalayan glacier's lifespan, and I would also like to know how much air pollution decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic. The scientific research in my news story is important to society because it can help them understand the causes and consequences of air pollution. It can also show society how to understand the challenges of air pollution, climate change, and the Himalayan glaciers melting and provide them with strategies to address the challenges. Studying air pollution, climate change, and the Himalayan glaciers melting can benefit people because it can provide individuals with a sustainable water supply and have a positive impact on agriculture and ecosystems in Asia. Scientists used measurements from NASA’s Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer which helped show the reductions in the aerosol optical depth. As well as scientists created simulations to see the soot concentration in the snow and the overall air pollution levels.
The question we will be researching is How did air pollution affect the Himalayan glaciers during and after the COVID-19 pandemic? After creating the research question, I created a hypothesis. The hypothesis that was created was that if the air pollution levels during the COVID-19 pandemic affect climate change, Himalayan glaciers will begin melting at a slower pace. My beliefs about climate change impacted my hypothesis because I also believed that climate change was influenced by air pollution and would eventually affect all the glaciers. My assumptions on the impact of air pollution on the Himalayan Glaciers after COVID-19 affected the research question. My assumptions also impacted my hypothesis because it led me to assume that this would have an everlasting effect on the Himalayan glaciers. Based on previous knowledge I know that air pollution is contributed to by humans, and that leads to climate change and causes the Himalayan glaciers to melt. The ethical issue of the impact on the communities that rely on the water from the Himalayan glacier for their water supply may impact how research is conducted on the main idea of my news story because it can lead researchers to try to determine alternate water supply sources. It can also impact the main idea of the chosen news story research due to how the air pollution from those communities has an impact on the melting of the Himalayan glaciers. The chosen ethical issue may impact advancements in the field of environmental science because it can alter how scientists research the impacts on the ecosystem and the communities impacted by the Himalayan glaciers. Viewing the world through a scientific lens may influence my personal life in a variety of ways. One way it can influence my personal life is by helping me make evidence-based decisions, by reviewing the evidence at hand before deciding. Another way it can help me is by being able to make me become more ethically aware. Being a scientifically informed
