The differences between more developed and less developed countries in economic
opportunities are extremely drastic (CEN), making climate change much more challenging for
the Global South; but what has made this disparity come to fruition? The Industrialization of the
more developed countries in the Global North allowed for mass production, and over time
transformed day-to-day life as we know it in the Global North, generating more and more
pollutants and mistreating the environment in search of profits. The Global South, which has had
negatable impacts on the climate in comparison to the Global North, is dealing with the heavy
consequences of climate change with minimal help from the Global North. In order to contribute
to the climate crisis in a productive manner, the Global North mustn’t see the environment as a
resource, and introduce the developing countries to renewable technologies that will allow them
to self-sustain with no interference or harmful environmental consequences.
The Global North contains the wealthiest countries with the most up-to-date technology
that allows them to not only increase
their wealth but protect it too.
Organizations such as the National
Renewable Energy Laboratory
(NREL) are absolutely essential to
preserve the planet, as they are
developing new practices and
applications while simultaneously
improving existing methods.
However, even the NREL is not
perfect, in an article titled, “How
Wind Turbines Could Power Defense
and Disaster Relief”, the first
application of these said turbines was
in a diagram of an offshore U.S.
military base. The first intrinsic thought
Src. National Renewable Energy Laboratory
of the organization was how this could help the already prosperous and invasive country of the
U.S. and not how this information and technology could be used to provide aid to these less
developed countries, introducing them to clean energy without the chance for their societies to
become dependent on fossil fuels, like most of the Global North is.
Introducing the Global South would not only drastically decrease the effect that climate
change will have on the globe as a whole, but would also provide these communities with more
socioeconomic opportunities such as the creation of jobs, better healthcare, and communal
protection(RMI). By striking the problem at its source, these less-developed countries won’t
need aid from the Global North after they are standing on their feet. Although there have been
efforts to provide substantial aid to these countries, such as the many developed countries that
promised to give $100 billion a year each since 2020 to developing countries, these promises are
empty and have not been fulfilled in the slightest (NREL), although there is some slight promise
that the agreement can be resolved at COP26. The Global South could have the same exact
opportunity and success as the Global North if they weren’t set back from the very beginning,
rooting all the way back to colonization. These continuous setbacks including colonization,
inexcusable racism, and increasingly severe weather have chained these developing countries to
the floor, where they will remain if not offered aid.
The Global North is very financially driven and needs to make the shift to humanitarian
views, which they provide not out of selfish intent, but out of the good for the whole globe. Once
the Global South has overcome the barriers to entry, they can start contributing in the same
fashion, pushing humanity forward together as a unit, while still maintaining the environment’s
functionality and beauty.
