Explain what is depicted in each fresco. Then, discuss why the artworks that you selected stand out to you. Painting fresco is a method of painting water-based pigments on plaster. Once the pigment and plaster dry it becomes a permanent part of the wall. Typically, really good at making murals as it is durable and has a matte surface. The basilica of San Francesco d’Assisi in Assisi Italy has a particularly pretty set of frescoes, as the walls and ceilings are painted. These frescoes have incredible colors to them, and great detail painted as well. The basilica is color and truly breathtaking. What really stands out to me about the frescoes of the basilica of San Francesco is the color of these paintings. They are so vibrant for being around 800 years old. The basilica has, like most churches’ depictions of the old and new testaments. On particular fresco that stands out is a crucifixion painted by Cimabue, a renaissance painter, it has overtime become a negative of itself, meaning the dark colors have turned like and the light colors have turned dark. Also within this Basilica are the legends of Saint Francis, which is 28 scenes for an example to the faithful (. One scene that’s has some really good detail is the third scene which is “dream of the palace” that shows a sleeping man and a palace in the background. You can see chairs and flowing curtains along with striking colors. Reference
