Objectives Learn how to analyze features in satellite images Articulate how (and possibly why) those features have changed through time Learn how to search and download Landsat images Deliverables Answers to questions 1 through 11 Submit your answers to the Assignment 5 Quiz You can upload your own image to the corresponding question in the Canvas Quiz. Websites used https://earthexplorer.usgs.gov/ Download satellite imagery Note The Landsat images that we will be analyzing during this lab are called LandsatLook Natural Color Images . 2 1. We are going to begin by inspecting and interpreting Landsat images acquired over different landscapes. Q1. Assign the Landsat images shown in Figure 1 to the following land cover classes: urban area, agricultural lands, and mountain range. Figure 1 Landsat Natural Look Images of different types of land cover.
3 2. We are now going to see how Landsat images can be useful to observe landscape changes over time. The Landsat images in Figure 2 show the city of Shanghai, China, in 1990 and 2018. The images of 1990 and 2018 were acquired by Landsat 5 (TM) and Landsat 8 (OLI) respectively. Note that slight color differences could be caused by different sensor specifications and atmospheric conditions. Q2. What do the observed changes imply concerning the socio-economic development of Shanghai between 1990 and 2018? Select the correct answers. Multiple answers can be selected. o Urban sprawl o More transportation infrastructure o Less urban green space o More shoreline development o Deforestation Figure 2 LandsatLook Natural Color Image (Path 118, Row 38) showing the city of Shanghai in 1990 (top) and 2018 (bottom).
4 Q3. The Landsat images in Figure 3 show a part of Yangzi River in China in 1989 and 2018. Is there evidence in the image that could explain the observed differences? Name the responsible feature, use 1 word. You may use additional resources ( link ).
