Lab 3: Managing Vector Data By Omar Qursha Chapter 5 Teaching Tutorial Questions 1) Why is it okay to use a space in a map name but not in a folder or feature class name? Map names can have spaces since the software recognizes spaces as characters. In folder and feature class names a space can corrupt the file, making it unreadable. 2) Which data types in Table 5.1 are NOT found in mgisdata? Coverages, database connections, layer files, tables, TINs, CAD drawings 3) Notice that if the term layer is used in the instructions, you are directed to use the Contents pane. If the term feature class is used, you are directed to the Catalog pane. Explain why. Layers are managed in the Contents pane, while feature classes are managed in the Catalog pane. Each element belongs in its respective pane since they must be managed separately. 4) Why do the districts and state boundary layers have different boundaries? Why is the state boundary so different from the basemap boundary? They come from different sources that use different coordinate systems therefore the scale is different. 5) What would happen if you clipped the njdistricts layer with the njbound_gen layer instead of using the Feature Class to Feature Class tool? Why would the result be a problem? The original boundary would be shifted into a random place and would be inaccurate as a result. 6) Where did the 1995 date for the dataset come from? The date came from the metadata of the dataset we downloaded for arc gis pro. 7) Submit a screenshot of your ArcGIS window at the end of the tutorial, showing the map frame with the Geology_Dissolve layer symbolized by unique values (based on
Unit)—just what the tutorial asks. Citation for USA states: Esri; U.S. Department of Commerce, Census Bureau; U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Ocean Service (NOS), National Geodetic Survey (NGS)
