Similarity: they are classified as mass movement Difference: flow is a mixture of water, rock and sentiment, while a Slide occurs when a section of soil and rock move down a slope. (iv) Describe two processes which contribute to the slow mass movements classified as heaves in Fig. 1.1. [4] It causes expansion, which causes deformation and contraction, resulting in shear failure.
(i) Select two factors shown in Fig. 1.2 and explain how each factor influences mass movement. [4] Water can seep into the soil at the base in river activity, causing a lack of support for the hill as the base weakens, leading to mass movement down the slope. Also, depending on the climate, if it is a rainy day, the rainfall can cause weight on the soil, increasing the chances of there being a mass movement. (ii) Explain how human activity might be responsible for triggering mass movement on slopes. [6] The human activity responsible for triggering mass movement on slopes is mining, constructing houses, and groundwater. This can create weight on the hill, and the vibrations that result from these human activities can cause an increase in the mass movement.
