For Milestone One, you will select two resources from the
list of government resources
provided and
respond to the questions below regarding the impact of the environmental issue you selected.
Review this presentation on
Utilizing Government Resources in Research
for assistance in completing
your research.
Final Project Topic
Environmental Issue:
Air quality, habitat loss, and desertification of Washington state and its wild lands due to the
growing risk of wildfires
Local Community Affected:
Washington State and the greater Pacific Northwest
Government Resources
In this section, outline the two government resources that you will use to respond to the Milestone One
questions below.
Government Resource #1:
Title:
Air Quality Data government website AirNow’s Wildfire resources page
Citation in APA format:
Wildfires landing page
. (n.d.)|
AirNow.gov
. Retrieved from https://www.airnow.gov/wildfires/
How does this resource relate to the environmental issue you chose? Does the information in the
resource apply to your local community or your state? Explain.
The resource relates to air quality of Washington State and its wild lands because it provides
a live fire and smoke map to learn about air quality and smoke around the United States.
From the map, you can see that a large majority of the wildfires are in the western coast of the
US, with a few around southeastern Washington and Oregon. The biggest fire currently in
Washington is the Baird Springs Fire, which has burned thousands of acres of land. The
AirNow Site also provides live updates on air quality by city. This government resource also
provides information on what to do before, during, and after a wildfire smoke event.
Government Resource #2:
Title:
Fire Statistics from the National Interagency Fire Center
Citation in APA format:
Statistics. (2023).
National Interagency Fire Center
. Retrieved from https://www.nifc.gov/fire-
information/statistics
How does this resource relate to the environmental issue you chose? Does the information in the
resource apply to your local community or your state? Explain.
This resource relates to air quality, habitat loss, and desertification of Washington State and
the PNW because it shares national statistics of current wildfires, but also dives deeper into
the specific fires that are present across the country and how many acres are burned through
the Incident Management Situation Report, which seems is updated daily. The website also
shares information on its many programs to deal with wildfires, including the post-fire recovery
program called Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER). BAER is an assessment team
where specialists in soils, hydrology, geology, wildlife, botany, and many more come together
to determine a plan to respond to threats of the wildfire on our ecosystem.
